That is dramatic, pity the power from the lightning couldn't be tapped.

Re: Dramatic Photo Of Lighting Hitting Tallest Building

There are several more "hits" recorded by amateur camera guys
http://www.flickr.com/search/?ss=2&w=all&q=Burj+khalifa+lightning&m=text
so not an "uncommon" occurrence...

Actually it was 88mph with 1.21 gigawatts of power.
How much is in a lightening bolt?

Re: Dramatic Photo Of Lighting Hitting Tallest Building

dont know but you can buy an 85mph one direct from DeLorean  http://www.delorean.com/store/p-7087-speedometer-85mph.aspx
you could make it go quicker if you took it to the top of the Burj Khalifa, which rises 2,716 feet and pushed it off

Re: Dramatic Photo Of Lighting Hitting Tallest Building

Apparently, the average lightning bolt transfers about 500MJ of energy, which would be enough to power an average house for about 12 days. (Goes to wait outside house with a metal rod and a big battery... Smiley)

Re: Dramatic Photo Of Lighting Hitting Tallest Building

So how do they take these great photos of lightning striking tall buildings? I assume they set up a camera when an electric storm is ongoing or imminent, but how is the camera triggered?  Can a censor be used to take a shot when it picks up the bright light of the lightning against the dark background of the sky?
