Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

I was bored so I popped out for a wander in the New Forest. I stopped by a couple of places where I often used to pick blackberries and I was surprised that I was the only person there.
I moved on to a place near a camp site. Lots of people there. Kids on bikes and adults walking dogs. But despite all the people there, only one other person besides me picking blackberries.
What has happened? In my youth it was a family thing. Everyone picking, from kids to Grannies.
Everyone seems to be banging on about the merits of fresh air, exercise, and fresh (organic) fruit. The whole caboodles here and no ones really bothered.
On the way home I stop and pick a bag of apples (from a tree by a forest track not a shop).
So for my tea I have a nice bacon sandwich topped with my fresh picked wild mushrooms followed by a nice big bowl of stewed apples and blackberries. Smiley
Shops seem full of packs of (expensive) blackberries, which would be laughed at years ago, so people must still eat them.
So what is it? Is it like mushrooms? People scared to pick their own in case they poison themselves? Or lazy why pick them when they can buy them.

Re: Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

Can't answer your question but I used to love going blackberry picking with my parents when I was a child. Haven't done it for years.

Re: Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

The convenience of the supermarkets & busy modern lifestyles are a most likely the common factor
I also remember it being a family affair & either SWMBO & I or both do take the kids around the local known spots, not just for Blackberries, but also apples / pears / water cress (there is a lovely spot for water cress right behind mums back garden)
We also have nettle tea from time to time (that reminds me I haven't had any in a while)
With mushrooms (you do have to be careful & know which ones you pick)
That said one could live off the fat of the land if they so wished
I wonder how many youngsters would know how to survive in the wild

Re: Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

I said in another thread that I've had a great crop of blackberries this year Smiley Smiley
A few weeks ago I thought they were finished but the recent spell of warm weather gave me another lovely picking last week. Delicious Smiley

I do and you should see the number that get picked on Ramblers walks - it can really slow things up
The late crop this year is generally really good

Good to know I'm not the odd one out.
Froze loads of blackberries. Think I'll make some tarts tomorrow.
Fruiting times do seem to have gone a bit screwy this year.
I was surprised to see one holly tree with berries just one shade away from being red.

Re: Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

We made blackberry jam, missus realised the benefit of me buying the Thermopen thermometer for the BBQ when she realised it could be used to monitor the jam mix temperature. Hence this time the jam has set properly rather than the usual runny.
It was quite a good crop of blackberries, though the missus didn't realise blackberrying is a competitive sport where underhand tactics are par for the day.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Swmbo's strawberry jam needs a very sharp knife to "slice"
Blackberry season is in full swing been picking yesterday.

I've just come back from a week in Wales where everyone was out picking them and elderberries around home just before we went away.

Re: Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

Picking Blackberries/Brambles was a child time "day out" at the weekend and very enjoyable, as we usually  had a picnic on a big travel rug, at a convenient spot with a nice view....
However,.... even then, (60 years ago) my father would not stop at "road side" bramble bushes, because, he said, the blackberries were covered in soot and dust from the exhausts of cars...  so I would never stop in a layby and pick fruit from the hedgerows........

Re: Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

When our daughter was about 7 we went blackberry picking and she got nettle stings. She decided that rubbing on blackberry juice was a good 'cure' and so coated all of her arms, legs and face - we returned home with her looking like an ancient Brit!

Re: Doesn't Anyone Pick Blackberries Anymore?

Best bet if you have the room is grow your own, purchase thornless blackberry plants from a specialist grower and you will get plenty of fruit from 3 or 4 plants providing you look after them correctly, plenty of details about pruning and caring for them on the internet.
So instead of spending hours picking them from hedgerows you can pick the same amount in 10 minutes and they will be bigger and taste better than the wild ones. With the added bonus of not getting scratches from thorns.
