Does any one recognise this plant.

The label on the seed packet reads ‘Basil’, looks, tastes and smells nothing like Basil.
To look at the leaf resembles‘Lemon Balm’ but larger, taste is bland.
Penny in top RH corner for scale.

hi journeys
You could ask flickr
Go to Flickr
its a plant pool
but you need to register  , its like a  plant newsgroup
then put your  'plant  photo up'  and wait for other users to see it
and hopefully they will  tell you

Re: Does any one recognise this plant.

it's lemon balm.  it has a mild taste of lemon and a reputation of having a calming effect when made into a tissane.  must be pretty robust because a bush of it planted itself in my garden and is doing well.

Re: Does any one recognise this plant.

@Artificer, thanks for posting, agree it is very similar to Lemon Balm (photo shows plant with Lemon Balm). I've a lemon balm (summer) hedge about 3 meters long.
Leaves are a different texture and larger, courser, thicker than lemon balm and not serrated on the edges like stinging nettles.
Also taste is not of ‘lemon’ more bland, wondered if it could be a species of spinach, or Chinese cabbage.
Got to remember the seeds came out of a ‘Basil’ packet, the packet is on top of one of the pots, unfortunately I’ve used all the seeds.
It’s unlikely I’ve switched packets as I mostly save my own seeds from previous year.
(could do with the calming effect as getting annoyed with seed company) LOL.

My favourite is Thai Basil

@Itsme:- Lemon Basil looks about right, although very bland taste, not even a hint of lemon.
Thanks for posting, will look into Lemon Basil.

Re: Does any one recognise this plant.

Sometimes when I've been stuck on something like this I've taken a small piece into my local garden centre and they have always been pleased to help with putting a name to a plant for me. Worth a try.

Re: Does any one recognise this plant.

It doesn't look like any kind of basil or lemon balm. Can't tell you what it is, though Smiley. I'd go along with the garden centre/nursery suggestion. Until you know what it is I would be a bit cautious about eating any of it!
