Document Shredding and the disposal of...

I have a shredder for sensitive document destruction.
I usually accumulate a shelf load and then have a good session, placing the results in my big blue wheelie bin.
However things have changed and my big blue wheelie bin is now only for bottles and cans, I have been supplied with a small blue plastic box complete with shower cap.
My problem is the box will only hold a small amount which has to include boxes and other packaging, magazines and junk mail etc.
I was wondering if I put out a black bag full of shreddings would the kind bin men empty it too or am I being a bit too optimistic. Undecided
I think I've just invented a new word with shreddings.

Re: Document Shredding and the disposal of...

Our local authority refuses to even accept shredded paper on the grounds that it can end up strewn all over the place if animals find it etc. You might want to check with yours otherwise you might find their legal dept writing to you.
Best bet is to stick it in the car and take it to the recycling facility near you.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

That's what I thought. Good job I have a car as I don't fancy walking 2 miles to the nearest Dumpit site with a couple of large black bags.

Ours goes in the compost bin in the garden - mixes in well.
Or the council will happily take it mixed in with our "green" waste (garden and kitchen compostable).
I think they advise to NOT put it in the kerbside paper recycling boxes.

Re: Document Shredding and the disposal of...

I once had a 3/4 full blue wheelie bin of shredded paper. One of the school kids kicked it over on his way to school. When I arrived home in the evening it was all over the front lawn and it was raining Angry

@Strat
We share the same recycling group. When we received the blue box "with shower cap", I seem to recall instructions that they were happy to accept shredded paper, but advised sandwiching the shreddings between newspapers and cereal boxes, for instance.
My shredding sessions are now once every two weeks.

Re: Document Shredding and the disposal of...

We're provided with a reusable bag for paper, and another for card.  They will take shredded paper, so it's not too much of a problem, but I also do put some in the compost bin occassionally (although both of our compost bins are so full, that I don't have enough garden to spread it all on!)  Roll eyes

Re: Document Shredding and the disposal of...

Looks like I'm going to get a compost bin then as the current one is a box formed out of sheets of ply and is giving up the ghost.
Might go for the big 330 litre one on here rather than this on on B&Q

Check out your local council, many subsidise them as they reduce waste collection.  Wink

That's what this is. It's subsidised for Sheffield residents. Smiley

Your local PDSA, or animal shelter, MAY be interested as it can be used for "small animal bedding"  e.g. hamsters, rats, mice... that people bring in.
Alternatively,.... keep on filling the black sacks, and put them up in the attic.... will make lovely loft insulation  - and FREE... ( A Yokshuman`s favourite word ! )
