Do you remember when....

.... the phone rang and it was almost always something important?

When chips cost 4d a bag, when there were no yellow lines, when you could go down the road for a pint, and when a 'scary halloween mask' was just that instead somebody not wearing a mask.

I certainly do. It was always black, and invariably in the hall. If you had a phone at all - it certainly wasn't anywhere near universal in those days.

Re: Do you remember when....

We weren`t posh enough to have a telephone in the house.... ... but I do remember when chips were cheap... and pickled onions were 2 for 1d and a bag of crackling was free, if you were cheeky enough to ask for one

Now I carry two phones around with me, but never make or receive any calls.... so I`m not important, even now ! ! !  Cry

You mean instead of "whirl whirl whirl your amazon prime account is about to run out..............."

After a few goes at that then followed by "whirl whirl whirl illegal activities have been detect on your internet contact your provider....................."

Nah not pressing any buttons.

I remember the 6d mix, a bag of chips topped with mushy peas and batter bits.

Also we lived in a city and our phone number was only 4 digits long....

Blue bags of salt in crisps, blue bags for laundry to keep your whites white.  Mangles and copper poshers.

Indicators on stalks and sherbert fountains.

Digging deep, and given I was out of the country for a few years, it must be at least fifteen years since I last used one of these.

I used to hate it when you opened the papery crisp pack only to find what can only be described as a big cloggy soft lump of all the (not so) crisps stuck together.

The old Salt and Shake? I am pretty certain they still make them and you can get them.
Pretty certain I saw them the other day in my supermarket.

Re: Do you remember when....

The shop where I worked as a paper boy a few years ago had an old type of phone on the wall in the hall.

It comprised of a large wooden box with a mouth-piece fixed to the front and an earpiece hung in a cradle on the side.

I never saw it used but I'm sure it was in working order.

An aunt that we visited had the more conventional black Bakelite phone.

We didn't have a phone.

Re: Do you remember when....

Maybe so @Alex but the new blue packets of salt are in a small plastic sachet aren't they?  The original ones were just a twist of blue (waxed?) paper.

It was pot luck whether you actually had a salt 'gift' in your packet of crisps, or you had three or more!
