Do you like BIG engines and their sound?

I do, I love the sound and pulse of a big engine and some of these are just ‘dirty’, the first is ...; well what do you think?

The Merlin engine sounds amazing when inside the body of an aircraft.

What on earth was that thing strapped to the back of a Beetle.

Re: Do you like BIG engines and their sound?

No I don't.

I like big engines but I don't like the sound. As the question contained "and" within it I can not say yes.

But big engines.. yeah.. very impressive. Shame about the pollution though..

Re: Do you like BIG engines and their sound?

But it's the sounds that makes it.

As a kid back in the 50s, as well as trying the be the first to recognise and identify by sight the makes of cars as they approached, a little later we would do the same with motorbikes - but by sound. The thump of a single cylinder BSA Goldstar was unmistakable as was the soft whine and rattle of an Aerial Arrow, others were a little more difficult.

Recognition by sight was one thing but by sound? that made for real class!

Re: Do you like BIG engines and their sound?

What that deep growl? No I dislike it.

If they all sounded like that high pitched turbo whine then i'd appreciate it more. With that said, some volvo engines make that lovely sound by themselves... it's bliss

Re: Do you like BIG engines and their sound?

You'll need a bigger starter motor for this one:

Judge by the size of the guys wearing white work hats that can just be made out.

Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Do you like BIG engines and their sound?

Well for me, apart from music there's nothing better than the sound of a well balanced big engine. On the subject of which, does anyone have a link to a video of a deltic running?

Re: Do you like BIG engines and their sound?

@Mook thanks for posting. Diesels were a big part of my life in my early years. I was installing Blackstone ESL6 and ESL8s in the late 1970s an early 80s in Nigeria. They were similar to the Allen diesel shown. They were air start and produced a great plume of black smoke on startup.

I did also work on Cummins KTA2300 also shown but they were powerful beasts and not so nice to work with. I remember the twin turbochargers glowed cherry red at full load!

Now i wear twin hearing aids, from a Lifetime working with recips gas and diesel and latterly with turbines. But i wouldn't have changed anything. It was fun!
