Do you know your road signs?

Apparently a More Than survey of 2000 drivers indicates we don't.
Quote
Eight per cent of drivers admitted they were baffled by the common 'road narrowing' sign, while almost a fifth said they did not know that when driving in a built-up area the speed limit is 30mph unless signs say otherwise.

2000 participants doesn't actually lead to conclusive evidence.
But, the questions stands; do you know your road signs?
Of the 10 in the article I was stumped on number 6.
I do tend to check out the Highway Code online every few years and helping SWMBO pass her test last year helped.

Re: Do you know your road signs?

I hadn't a clue about number 10 and indeed looking at the point where the A31 becomes the M27 it isn't used
I knew the others

Re: Do you know your road signs?

It's a diversion, there isn't one there, is there?

Re: Do you know your road signs?

Failed on number 10!
Can't say that I've ever seen it, though it's very similar to the Priorite sign in France!

Re: Do you know your road signs?

Didn't spot the diversion bit - I knew about it being a diversion usually but wasn't aware that there was a special one for motorways
I just checked http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/documents/digitalasset/dg_07... and the Mail got it wrong - it is a standard diversion sign

Re: Do you know your road signs?

even though its been a few years since my licence was withdrawn I recognised all the signs, I also thought the last one was a standard diversion symbol
wanna bet the majority of people polled didn't pass there driving test in England .....

Re: Do you know your road signs?

Trouble with diversions is that they use different symbols for different routes - eg you got a main road closed and it goes to two places they'll usea diamond for one route and a circle / square for the other so the motorist apparently knows which diversion to take.
Quite frankly though, I think the road signs need a massive overhaul. We got the "Know your traffic signs" book (yes I'll admit, my idea as I was bored!) and it's as thick as the highway code. There is no way you can remember all the different signs out there. Just look at the size of them both:

Most people have enuogh trouble remembering the most parts of the highway code and then they publish a book just of almost equal size about traffic signs too. It is crazy.

Re: Do you know your road signs?

TBH road signs are one of the most important things for a motorist to know.
If you don't now them, you shouldn't be driving, no excuses.
As Nanotm mentioned, how many of the 2000 even had a British driving licence!

Ok, here's a question... NO GOOGLING!!!!!!!
What colour studs/cats eyes are used to mark the slip roads on the motorway?  Wink

Green. That however depends on which side of the slipway you're talking  Tongue
