Do which actually understand broadband speeds

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-33164725
Quote
ts tests indicated that only 4% of customers on TalkTalk's 17Mbps package were getting the top advertised speed and just 1% of those on BT's 76Mbps deals could achieve that speed.
I assume that they got the results from http://www.which.co.uk/technology/broadband-tv-and-phone/guides/speed-test-your-internet-connection/
So they are apparently confusing connection speed with speed test results
This is from the Times http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/technology/internet/article4472902.ece
Quote
The top speed of the 76 megabits per second (Mbps) package sold by BT could be reached by only 1 per cent of customers, an analysis of Ofcom data by Which? found. Only 1 per cent of customers could reach the 76 Mbps advertised in a package sold by Plusnet. For TalkTalk’s 17 Mbps package, 4 per cent could reach the maximum advertised speed.

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

Hmm my router is connected to TalkTalk@16414 kbps on a 17Mbps package and a speed test on your first link gives me a downstream of 14.85Mbps

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

Sadly it does seem these consumer bodies and the national press are always unclear on any issues related to broadband.

Which? are a group who are paid to be nice about products, and slate those who don't stump up, it's the opinion of the end-user that matters, if a product is five H one Tee, then people won't buy it (if they're smart enough to think that way)...

Totally wrong, Which? are totally independent and bow to no one.
Some time ago they asked members whether they should allow good products to be endorsed in manufacturers adverts with a Which? logo and we agreed.
I vaguely remember one instance where a manufacturer was using the logo on a wrong product and Which? got it removed.
Let's be careful out there !

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

Most of the Broadband company executives, including BT and Openreach, seem to be from a marketing background. Small wonder the adverts are so errm misleading.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

just because someone is independent doesn't mean they can't give a slanted or biased opinion.
it just means they aren't being paid for it.
Which? reviews in recent times have been dubious to say the least IMO.

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

"Which" is the magazine (and website) of the Consumer's Association and I have been a member since before the internet was thought about.
It's an honest independent organisation.  Roll eyes
Back on subject though, if they can get the facts so wrong on broadband speeds how much more of their research is equally flawed?  Huh

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

I haven't read a copy of Which? for many years precisely because every time they reported on something I do know about their conclusions were flawed (IMHO), so I couldn't trust them on the products I know nothing about Sad

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

OK, so as someone who falls into this category "Do Which actually understand broadband speeds"
what is the difference that you are referring to?
I am on plusnet fibre, I have a 6 week old pc - HP i5, fairly close to a box & exchange,
and there are nights when my bb connection seems to struggle.
My Skype, YouTube & other internet experiences are good, no complaints on
the service I am receiving, but I do wonder why some nights, the bb seems to
lag, if that is the correct description?

And this is the same "Which" which recommend Plusnet, just look at the big banner on the Plusnet homepage.
So are Which any good ?

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

OFCOM's new regulations seem to stem from a similar lack of understanding...
Do they understand that switching broadband provider won't (usually) improve speeds unless you're going to/from Virgin Media?

@hillifields you've nailed it.  Smiley
It's all about trying to consumerise everything while ignoring technical issues.
Net result like many posts on here I'll squeem, an squeem, and squeem till I get what I've paid for  Angry

Re: Do which actually understand broadband speeds

there's nothing wrong with wanting and getting what you've paid for.
the problem lies with what you're being told you'll get for your money. - fix that and you'll stop the vast majority of the squeemers.
