Did you think that looking at Youtube was private?

A recent article in the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/jul/04/youtube.google
reveals that all your Youtube browsing is to be given by Google to another multinational corporation:-
Quote
The internet giant Google is being forced to hand over the personal information of every person who has ever watched a video on the YouTube website as part of a billion-dollar court case in the US.
A judge in New York has ordered that Google, which owns YouTube, must pass on the details of more than 100 million people - many of them in the UK - to Viacom, the US broadcasting company which owns channels including MTV and Nickelodeon.
The data will include unique internet addresses, email accounts and the history of every video watched on the website, giving Viacom's experts the ability to conduct a detailed examination of the viewing habits of millions of people around the world...

I have watched a number of Youtube videos, normally linked to from here, and have never provided any information at all, so the most that the have from me is my IP address.

Youtube also operate a subscription model - certainly for content providers and possibly for "extra features" or chat or forums... (usual rubbish).
You may also have a link between Google and Youtube - their popular search engine certainly has strong linkages with Youtube for video searches...
Then there will be gmail linkages... usenet linkages... (All text groups from 1981 onwards...).
Links to image files -  in fact they know a fair bit more about you than your IP address!

Perhaps a return to using Yahoo is called for?
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Unlike Google or Microsoft, which keep confidential records of its users outside mainland China, Yahoo! stated that the company will not protect the privacy and confidentiality of its Chinese customers from the authorities.

(from Wikipedia).
Perhaps we all need anonymiser software?
