Desert Island Discs is 70!

Desert Island Discs celebrates 70 years
Quote
First broadcast on 29 January 1942, the programme was conceived and presented by playwright and novelist Roy Plomley, who each week asked a guest to choose eight songs, a book and luxury item for their imaginary stay on the island.

So, what songs (doesn't have to be eight, book and luxury item would you take?
Songs:
Since I lost you - Genesis
Parisienne Walkways - Gary Moore
Caroline - Status Quo (reminds me of my teenage years and my attempts at being a rock star)
Pack Up - Eliza Doolittle
Any organ music by Bach
So Excited - Pointer Sisters
You Raise Me Up - Josh Groban
48 Crash - Suzy Quatro

Book: Casino Royal (I have attempted to read it several times but always got side-tracked with something else)
Luxury item: Large box of shortbread biscuits

Re: Desert Island Discs is 70!

I remember some of the earlier programmes with Roy Plomley "in the chair", and right from an early age, I wondered how they managed to play them records, on a deserted, desert island, where there is no electricity, (presumably they had a wind up gramophone)... but that gets kinda tedious, don`t it....
Another thought... how does a "desert" island, exist in the middle of the sea?  Undecided

Re: Desert Island Discs is 70!

I'll play:-
Songs: So hard just to limit it to eight.
Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds (spent hours stargazing with this on the headphones,
....................................................... Every time I look up and see Mars I hear Richard Burton….” No-one would have
Shostakovich’s Symphony no 7
Len Beadell’s Blast in the Bush (sound track of his presentation I attended, really funny guy)
Mascagni - Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana
Dire Straights – Sultans of Swing
Grieg’s Peer Gynt
Holst’s Planets
Bob Dylan:-  Mr Tambourine Man
Luxury Item:- A Meade Dobsonian 16
Book:-  Either ‘The Ancestors Tale’ (Richard Dawkin) or ‘A Short History of almost everything’ (Bill Bryson)
Has anyone heard of a radio program on (3 hours in the afternoon I remember) one day a week called “Nine months to Mars” although I cannot remember which country/state it was broadcast in and when it was on I used to be an avid listener. It featured ‘would be’ Astronauts travelling to Mars and selecting a whole combination of things (Films, Books, Music, objects), with clips being played from each, remember Buzz Aldrin featured in one episode so it was after 1970, gave a far more depth interview than DID

Rossinni - The Barber of Seville   - dont want to look scruffy
Mozart - the magic flute    - then you could have more

Ooo no! I'd be quite green and have them solar powered. I assume this desert island would be somewhere warm and sunny.
Edit: and a complete cure for my arthritic fingers so I could play the thing like I did as a young man...
