Decisions decisions! Is one worth a tenner more than the other?

My multi-function is playing up and I need to get a replacement. I have my eye on two that are almost identical, bar that one is £10 dearer than the other. I am not a heavy user, so is the extra tenner worth it? Hmmm.

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

The extra £10 seems to get you a card reader on the device and a very small decrease in scanning speed.

Are the consumables the same cost?  If yes, then get the cheaper one. I had a multifunction with a card reader and never used it. Easier to use the PC to read cards and manipulate the contents.

For the extra tenner ..... you get......

Slightly more weight !   but you get slightly less noise !

Slightly more stand by power.

Memory Card Slots/Card Direct

Slightly slower scan speed on first copy.. but you gain slightly on multi copy speed

A bigger display size    7.5 cm  compared to "el cheapo" at 6.2 cm

you also get a touch screen,... which "el cheapo" fails to mention.

so   there you have it.... pay the money and have fun ! ! ...

Correct of course! Wink

But as a lower end user, who has never had the luxury of a touch screen, and has a stand alone reader?

Weight is neither here nor there; I'm not going to be carrying it much. Noise; what's that difference mean in real use... a tornado vs a gale, or one vs two butterflies flapping their wings?

Re: Decisions decisions! Is one worth a tenner more than the other?

Here is a list of common noises and their decibel levels:

  • Aircraft at take-off (180)
  • Fireworks (140)
  • Snowmobile (120)
  • Chain saw (110)
  • Amplified music (110)
  • Lawn mower (90)
  • Noisy office (90)
  • Vacuum cleaner (80)
  • City traffic (80)
  • Normal conversation (60)
  • Refrigerator humming (40)
  • Whisper (20)
  • Leaves rustling (10)
  • Calm breathing (10)

Perceptions of increases in decibel level

The list below gives you an idea of how noticable a change in decibel level will be to you:

  • 1dB  –  Not noticable
  • 3dB  –  Barely noticeable
  • 5dB  –  Clearly noticeable change
  • 10dB  –  About twice as loud
  • 20dB  –  About four times as loud

source

So both are the same as the fridge and you wouldn't notice the difference.

The list of common noises includes a snowmobile?

Can't say I've heard one recently...

I must have been really bad in a previous life. This is my 3rd ISP in a row that uses lithium.

So a Lawn mower (90)  = Noisy office (90)?

Is that an electric or a two stroke infernal combustion engine?

Amplified Music (110)

Would that be a portable radio or a 50kW PA system?

Neither, 4-stroke, nobody makes 2-stroke mowers these days, at least not on this side of the earth... Grin

and at what distance?

Pretty sure if i were strapped to a 747 engine taking off it would be a higher decibel reading than that...

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Louder than a snowmobile?

Re: Decisions decisions! Is one worth a tenner more than the other?

Well, in the end I bought the dearer one, as the reports seemed a little more positive. I would have purchased from a we-are-never-undersold store, but their offer for the model had been modified, and it would involve click and collect or waiting delivery. So went elsewhere and got it in two days.

Linking to my "are you colour conscious" thread, I chose the non matching option, as that was the cheaper.
