Re: Dear Customer,

Big clue - HMRC don't send emails to the public.

The older I get, the earlier it gets late.

Re: Dear Customer,

Since when have HMRC referred to taxpayers as ‘customers’? Second word in and it is obviously fake.

Re: Dear Customer,

All mine start with :

Dear Mr forename surname

and end with :

Re: Dear Customer,

The obvious question - does HMRC have your email address? - I would think not.

Re: Dear Customer,

Her’s a clue :

Why you got this email

You got this email because you’ve chosen to receive email updates instead of letters by post.

Re: Dear Customer,

@jab1

They have mine. And @Champnet‘s too according to post #5. My guess is they have quite a lot of people’s email addresses, but it is still remarkably easy to spot the fake emails with a bit of sensible caution.

Re: Dear Customer,

OK, @Champnet Sorry, but as I've had very little to do with HMRC over the past 10 years or so, I didn't know they'd finally moved into the 20th century. 😉

Re: Dear Customer,

If they were real I'd have been due several thousands worth of rebates, amazing considering my miserable income!!! 🤣

Re: Dear Customer,

@Anonymous Fair enough - see my reply to @Champnet .I agree fakes should be easy to spot - they certainly would be for me - any unknown addresses are highlighted in my mail-filtering program.

Fair enough, I was unaware that they did.

I only ever get the annual statement of coding in the post. Thanks for the info.

Sadly it is not always as straightforward for those of us whose online lives are carried out mainly on iPads or other tablets. It can be rather more difficult to spot the real email address on these devices, and our fingers are sometimes far too used to clicking on links.
