Davy Jones dies of heart attack

Davy Jones of The Monkees dies aged 66
Quote
Davy Jones, Manchester-born lead singer with 60s band The Monkees, has died aged 66, his publicist has confirmed.
He died in his sleep at his home in Florida. His publicist, Deborah Robicheau, said he had a massive heart attack.

Quote
He appeared aged 11 on ITV soap Coronation Street, as Ena Sharples's grandson. He also appeared in the television series Z Cars before leaving showbusiness to train as a jockey.

I have fond memories of Saturday evenings with The Monkeys

He's taken the Last Train to Clarksville.
Quite enjoyed the Monkees; Pleasant Valley Sunday was a favourite of mine

A must see on a Saturday.
The first 'boy band' that many others followed.

Re: Davy Jones dies of heart attack

Am I missing something here; my recollection is that the Monkees were cobbled together as an ad-hoc studio band as a direct result of and to combat the American success of the Beatles with the cynical addition of an English Beatle look-alike (Davy Jones RIP) It being sometime after their first hit before they took to the stage with a live performance.
Of course these days bands being "produced" rather than evolving together over time is now almost the only way to go, largely thanks to reality TV.
Not sure about "first" boy band artmo, there were plenty of successful all boy quartets around in the late 50's early 60's mostly black American. The difference being then they had to be able to sing in tune as well, now they merely have to look right.

@ Petlew..... I think you are right.... there was much discussion in the music press, as to whether they could actually play the instruments, as they had become "popular" before ever going on tour, and the "promoters" decided to get a tour together, (probably gave them some quick guitar tuition ) to prove they were "real" and so that they did not lose any money

Re: Davy Jones dies of heart attack

It was as a result of a successful TV show that it was decided to make them into a band and launch them on a Pop career.  Initially there was criticism that they couldn't play their instruments but their fan base didn't seem to be concerned with this.

Re: Davy Jones dies of heart attack

I'll just throw in my criticism of them being referred to as a band rather than a group.
In my mind a band plays instruments, a group doesn't necessarily do so.
This grumble stems from the term 'boy band' where you have a group of male singers.

Re: Davy Jones dies of heart attack

Quite agree Strat. In my musical "career" I always played in "groups". Bands were of the dance band variety Glen Miller etc.

@strat, would your comment stretch to a Rubber Band, or would that be too elastic  an example ?  Roll eyes

Re: Davy Jones dies of heart attack

Yes they were a manufactured group and, without checking any of these, I assume they didn’t write much of their early songs. I also assume they were selected for their personality, character, looks and ability to sing a bit and be ‘a bit zany’; either way it came together pretty well. It isn’t my usual style or type of music but they made some very good ‘pop’ music. I believe they got better and started to have greater control over the songs.
I think Nesmith was the only one to have a music career after the Monkees and seem to recall him becoming a well-received songwriter….didn’t he also move into films?

The Wiki entry for the Monkees is quite comprehensive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monkees

Mike Reid has just been interviewed on LBC.  He said when they left Screen Gems, the company that set them up, they had earned nothing.
A bit of trivia.  Mike Nesmith has a rich individual.  His mother was the inventor of Tippex.(Liquid paper)
