DVD Decoder

Wasn’t sure where to post this so please move if necessary.
SWMBO has bought an old Inspiron 1501 laptop from a work colleague to, primarily, help with the kid’s homework. We tried to play a dvd on it and Media Player gave a message saying that a dvd decoder in not installed. The disk drive is a HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4244.
Any ideas on how I can obtain a dvd decoder for it?

Re: DVD Decoder

Anything here:-

You can put in your service tag number to make it more relevant to your particular model.

Re: DVD Decoder

From what I remember you need a dvd player to play dvd's on M$ OS's. Try a google for free xp dvd player.

Re: DVD Decoder

Sounds to me like the software to play DVD's isn't on the laptop anymore, this CDRW/DVD GCC4244 seems to be your optical drive where CD's/DVD's go.It's possible you need to install a driver/software from the manufacturer for the optical drive as billnotben suggests.
You might first try a different media player to play DVD's with, I use VLC Player and it's a brilliant player for all file types including DVD's.
It's open source (free) and it's the best media player in my opinion, you can download it here:

Re: DVD Decoder

I'll second using Videolan (VLC Player) - plays just about anything you throw at it.
