DSL Connection - How Long?

Just curious how long peoples DSL connection lasts before dropping?
Just gone over 50 days which is unusual for me as the norm is rarely more than 30 days. Generally always someone fiddling in the cabinet every month. Maybe the rain has kept them away.

Re: DSL Connection - How Long?

Cool I suggest BillNotBen is living next to the exchange.
Loss of sync on my line seems to happen in clusters The last loss of sync killed the line. When the Openreach engineer checked the line he could not figure what was wrong. He checked everything from the router to the exchange - which involved much driving of his van - and all he could confirm was his test equipment was seeing the same bizare fault. He went above and beyond and changed the copper, and it's been almost stable since - had one evening when the sync freaked out again, but came back the following morning. I blame Sunspots.
Which leads me on to - I was thinking about installing an after market but genuine, BT Openreach NTe5 master socket with the vDSL/ADSL phone faceplate filter - the one fitted for FTTC. Anyone have any experiences using this piece of hardware?

If only.
A year or so ago I was lucky if it lasted much more than three days.

Re: DSL Connection - How Long?

Just to show that a long line isn't always bad - we've a line that's showing a 60dB attenuation/3dB SNR margin and only negotiates 2mb ADSL2 (no +) due presumably to many of the higher frequencies being too attenuated. We're around 6km from the exchange however the line is rock solid with hardly any errors, the SNR margin hardly changes night or day and it only ever drops the DSL connection if SWMBO pulls the modem's plug out to connect something else. Longest connection time was around 4 months once. Can only assume there's some pretty good quality cabling and jointing between us and the exchange.
However the PPP connection doesn't usually last longer than a couple of weeks.

You have no idea how lucky you are, never a week goes by that BT are not fiddling in the cabinet at the top of our road, sometimes it can be 2 or 3 times in one week and not uncommon to see at least 2 vans there for several hours.
Not sure how often my line drops.

Have they got a secret stash of booze in the cabinet?

Perhaps they get a bonus or it's on their tick list but there is something in there that attracts them like bees to a honey pot. Smiley

Re: DSL Connection - How Long?

I'd have to stop and ask them why they spend all the time there Wink
