Re: DIY avalanche - Scotland

I have noticed that the couple of new builds near me that have look-alike slate tiles that the snow easily slip off when the snow has built up and were becoming dangerous to pedestrians if they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
As a skier I see how houses in ski resorts manager snow and ice on the roofs. They do several things, the roof is fitted with either row of barriers or multitude of hooks to keep the snow from sliding off. The gutters are hanged to enable them to be dropped under the roof overhang so the weight of the snow does not bring them down. Also another danger is large icicles breaking off above pedestrians so sometimes you will see chains being used as icicle formers. The weight of the icicle is spread along the chain and not just at the base.
