Cyclist Number Plates - A Good Move?

A school has told cycling pupils their bike will have to have a number plate to be allowed in school. This is an effort to combat dangerous cycling by pupils.

BBC Cycling

Watching cycling pupils regularly weaving in front of buses for fun to stop them passing I think the school has a point.

But what will be done to those who are reported to the school?

Personally I would like to see the clocks turned back and just have a burly policeman grab the offenders by the scruff of their necks.

Why not if it has the potential to save a life. Might be better if it were government backed, but that would then cause issues around its funding and policing.

Someone commented:

Make helmets and reflective clothing mandatory first.

I agree and when all the pedestrians are kitted out, start on the cyclists.

I agree cyclists should have a number plate and also carry mandatory insurance. In London they can be seen breaking all the rules of the road and getting away with it.

If you visit Cambridge you will see the cycles there do carry a number. This allows any cycle to be tracked back to the riders' College.

I love cycling and drive a car and think in this day and age where cycling is become popular again and with the constant increase of vehicles on the road, everyone who uses the road should be treated the same. All cycles should be identifiable, insured and helmets compulsory.

Agree with the above posts and would add that it should be a statutory requirement for all bikes to have a bell or horn.

Re: Cyclist Number Plates - A Good Move?

We generally agree what is needed but..........

even if all was rolled out nationwide there would still be no one to enforce it or even have the will to enforce it.

Unless of course they were speeding.

Robocop is here. He lives in a metal box by the roadside.

Unlike the film he doesn't work with the police he's replaced them or turned them into office workers.
