Customs union

Are custom unions racist. ?

my understanding of a customs union is a number of countries joining together to have free trade amongst it's members.

Any country not currently a member could only join with the agreement of the existing members and would of course be subject to the rules and regulations of the group.

So why do I ask why are such groups racist as they also trade with non members ? Trade with non members can result in a range of different tariff's being applied to many of those goods. Items that the custom union need or produce little of may attract a low or even no tariff but items that the union has plenty of are likely to attract higher tariff's.

Many but not all of those not in that custom union are poor countries and to cover the increase costs of selling some goods to those in a custom union means lower wages for those producing those goods in sweat factories, in addition the quality of some of those goods may be of poor quality in a effort to reduce production costs.

Without customs unions we would likely have to pay more for some goods but the savings we make now are costing others a lot.

So are custom unions racist?

I must have been really bad in a previous life as this was my 3rd ISP in a row that used lithium.
Now you're stuck with me because my new ISP doesn't run a forum Cheesy

Re: Customs union

Neither racist (or xenophobic) when it comes to trade.

For whatever rhyme or reason some might not like Johnny Foreigner, but the business fraternity would be beyond foolish to pay it any mind.

A billion from flogging arms to Saudi Arabia? Not a problem, apparently.

@Minivanman

But those are exports.

It's the tariff's of goods coming into the custom union I was thinking about.

Can we honestly say we are not exploiting some of those we trade with ?

Sure it's good business sense to do so but is that not another issue ?

Re: Customs union

Without doubt we exploit other countries and have done since day dot but rightly or wrongly, that's the way the world has divided. The continent of Africa is hardly in the running when it comes to GDP yet the world still mines it's resources on a vast scale. The UK is on par with France, less than Germany, Japan doing very well thank you and although China and the US knocks everybody else into a cocked hat, between those five lays half of the worlds trade.

With a GDP three times the size of the UK maybe it's China that's exploiting us, but does that make them racists? As for the EU and the customs union that's just a bear pit dominated by Germany...... and what have they ever done for us. Wink
