The flight will land at Brize Norton and it is reported the passengers will be quarantined at an ex NHS facility in Yorkshire.

What you failed to mention was that nurses are being forced out to make space for these people to be quarantined. Yes that's right, nurses are effectively being put out on the streets while being expected to care for the sick.

So when that prat a few days ago said the NHS was fully prepared for any cases here in the UK what he really meant was we have absolutely nothing ready, no clue how to find people who've been exposed and nowhere to put people in quarantine.

This country is a shambles.

Look at how fast the chinese are building entire hospitals and we can't even build a single quarantine block?

Then that flight coming back... less than 2 hours notice many of those people had - and consequently some missed it. In other words the government is begrudgingly bringing those people back and trying to shake off as many as possible (quite wise to be fair).

The governments whole attitude at present is one of cluelessness. The first thing they should have done was to close down the ports to protect people in this country.. but no... they knew best... and now we have it here and the WHO declaring a world wide emergency.

Be prepared people.. because this government isn't.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Coronavirus

Another ill-informed rant.

No nurses have been put out on the street. The property being used for isolation had 10 people living in it and they were not all nurses. All have been put into hotels at the taxpayers expense.

The location could well have been selected due to its close proximity to Liverpool which has a world renowned hospital dealing in infectous diseases.

From what we've seen so far the NHS seems to be well prepared in dealing with people returning from abroad and also dealng with people infected with the virus already here.

The delays in the flight returning British citizens to the UK were caused by the Chinese.  They did not grant permission originally and then did not approve some of their own citizins, married to UK citizens, to leave China. I read that discussions are ongoing to address this problem. There are still UK citizens in China and I assume additional airlifts will be organised if necessary.

Re: Coronavirus

Marrying a UK citizen doesn't automatically make you a UK citizen.  In the cases shown on TV, the Chinese partner was unable to leave since visas take time to acquire (lengthy interviews etc.).  Children of UK citizens born in China would of course need to obtain UK passports which also takes time.

Is it OK to call this flu pandemic the yellow peril?

Asking for a friend.

Got to be careful about what you say, it's a slippery slope where racial stereotypes are concerned... 😬

You have some funny friends, @Minivanman 😀

Personally, I can't see why we need to name it as anything other than the 'official' title.

@jab1

A Harvard University epidemiologist tweeted that coronavirus is ‘thermonuclear pandemic level bad’. As the known death toll reaches 130, coronavirus has rapidly become – for the media at least – the new Yellow Peril.

@Minivanman

I'm always suspicious of 'Havard University' experts - they seem to spring up everywhere and spout some right drivel (at times).

As for the media - where else would they be without the odd crisis - or three?

Ha, ha....the reason pretty much every nasty virus originates in China / Asia is that they live in close proximity to chickens, ducks and pigs ( often in same house ) and have some pretty nasty habits of eating wild animals  like bats and monkeys which allows nasty pathogens to jump the species gap and enter humans.   The Ebola virus in Africa came from fruit bat meat which is sold there for human consumption, and AIDS came from monkeys, so yes certain areas of the world offer a gateway for diseases into humans because of their way of life.. so we can racially stereotype even viruses ....

Re: Coronavirus

A quick check of official UK statistics tells me that 2000 people die of pneumonia each year and 10,000 from 'flu. related symptoms. There is also a statistic for "excess winter deaths" which is how many more people die over winter that is statistically normal. This can be as high as 50,000.

The liklihood of death from this particular virus seems to be no greater than most other types and certainly nothing like the terrible Spanish 'flu of 1919 with a World death toll allegedly in tens of millions.

I feel this current virus is Project Fear 3 rather than Bubonic plague 2.0.

Are those world wide figures or just the UK?
