Cones

No not ice cream cones............Road cones.
Now I can understand that one team may put them out the previous day  but driving up the M6 three times this week, set of cones out and a 50 mph speed limit sign up but not a single workman in sight on the coned off bit, we are not talking about a couple of hundred yards these things must cover a good mile at least.
Simply cannot understand it.
I'm coned off to put it mildly !

Re: Cones

Ah I'm glad you brought this up because I've had another similar thought about them...

Why do they continue to deploy these cones by hand? - There is clearly a bit at the top for them to be put out by machine and then scooped up yet our highways depots seem to think it's better to risk the lives of people putting them out by hand and then recollecting them.
No part of the cone use makes sense to me. As gleneagles says they're put out / left out where nothing is happening for no apparent reason and then when they do put them out they do it by hand risking life and limb.
Does any of it make sense?

Re: Cones

They are actually an alien life-form that breed only when not observed Wink

Re: Cones

Yes I noticed many seem to live and multiply in rivers too.

Strange as it seems but the bit at the top is the handhold to make deploying and picking up by hand easier. Some times the cones are there due to works out off site on the embankment or under a bridge. In other cases it is because a  problem as been spotted in the carriage way and further assessment it needed. Of course it could be that some one forgot to pick them up!

I think that's the point.
Local council short of money. Stick up a line of cones plus a speed camera. Problem solved.

Re: Cones

I've often seen amber lamps fitted to the tops that flash (seemingly) randomly but probably at different times depending when each was turned on. I have also seen them flashing from nearest to furthest usually leading up to and including the point where a lane is being closed off.

Re: Cones

Well here are some traffic cone deployment machines:
In this first pic, you can clearly see the machine handles the top of the cone:

Re: Cones

Was driving up the A1 today after dropping off daughter at uni in Hull, when coming home at around 3PM there was cones cordoning off one lane like mentioned before and no workmen were visible.
There was an LED sign saying that works were commencing on Monday 22nd Sept!
Why put them down beforehand?

Re: Cones

as it is only 2 day until they propose to start, I guess that they are preparing the motorists

Re: Cones

And it's probably less risky for the workers to lay them out on Saturday than Monday.

Never seen a machine deploying cones, only manually at silly'o'clock.
