Re: Commonwealth Games 2014, Broadcast and Technical Aspects

I think broadcasters here in the UK need to concentrate more on the quality of content rather than trying to get 4K out to the masses.
Also, apart from cost, there is the fact that UK homes are not generally big so who will be able to install 55" and above? Even at 55" most people would be hard-pushed to see any discernible difference over 1080p.
Plus limited bandwidth will mean some current channels will suffer in order to get 4K to the few who will buy in to all the hype.

Don't eat the Deep Fried Mars Bars !!
And don't use someone else's Mobile Phone !

An outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting has hit the athletes’ village for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow a week before the action begins.

I'm not involved, I shall stay behind my Isolation Barrier, and watch it on TV.

Is that right about UHD? You can barely notice the differences between UHD and HD up to 55"?

Re: Commonwealth Games 2014, Broadcast and Technical Aspects

there's a link in a thread about it somewhere on here, basically unless your sat within a few inch's of the screen you wont see the visible difference until the screen is over 60" when your sat far enough away to see all of the screen at once, according to sony's press release there's no point getting 4k unless its for a 30" desktop screen where your sat close enough to see the quality difference

BBC trials TV innovations at Commonwealth Games
The BBC is using the Commonwealth Games to experiment with new ways of delivering TV coverage of live events.
High-frame-rate (HFR) and ultra-high-definition (UHD) streams of the tournament will be publicly tested in London and Glasgow, alongside regular broadcasts.

Re: Commonwealth Games 2014, Broadcast and Technical Aspects

would there be a lot of change required to the transmitters /receivers to enable UHD as a broadcast service ?

Re: Commonwealth Games 2014, Broadcast and Technical Aspects

As I understand it...
Initially, available IP Broadband only.
And direct recorded media (eg bluray DVD)
The massive increase in bandwidth UHD requires for over the air (terrestrial) transmission is a problem at the moment, though data compression is being looked into.
Satellite TV will probably have the first available UHD Broadcasts in the UK, some trials already done.
Here's a couple of interesting articles.
