Re: Cold Callers moneyexpert.com knocking on doors

If you're a money expert, why do you have to go cold calling?  Surely a job in the city is yours for the taking.

Re: Cold Callers moneyexpert.com knocking on doors

Possibly a Nottingham Knocker or a variation on that theme.

We had one the other day, I called the police on 101, they took it very seriously and were here in a flash and then cruised round the area looking for the individual.

My wife had seen a minivan of louts park in a small lane near to us and not knowing the implications, hadn't mentioned it.

These are nasty people who prey on any & everyone.

They may be selling items, canvassing for home insulation, quotes on gas/electricity, whatever. Sometimes you get a sob story, ex-con going straight, waiting for the army, paying his way through college.

If they are selling, the items are invariably priced £4.99 or £9.99.

The victim buys something, hands over the £5 or £10 note for the 1p change, the caller takes it, sniffs it at some point to see if its musty, indicating the note has been stored in the house, smiles & leaves. Later the house is broken into. The victim's address goes on a list, sold on in pubs/prisons.

There were quite a few articles in the papers a few months back. Have a look for Nottingham Knockers.

Re: Cold Callers moneyexpert.com knocking on doors

Do people still get as many cold callers knocking these days? We certainly don't and certainly not not enough to warrant putting a sign up. Last one we had was at least three years ago from a pair of elderly Chapel goers touting for parishioners.

One import we do not seem to have had from our American cousins (thank heavens) is the 'new neighbour welcome' with that apple pie wagon. Just imagine eh - an introduction to the local neighbourhood watch, best supplier of weed, roach rolling classes, and the nearest after hours drinking den plus, an old copy of Big Issue. Oh yeah, and keep your doors locked mate!

Nice round ere innit Smiley

Re: Cold Callers moneyexpert.com knocking on doors

I find this little trick works for a lot of cold callers, especially those selling something. I tell them that I'm renting the property. They usually leave straight away when I tell them that.

Doesn't work with those pesky 'tick or treat' kids that swarm around the neighbourhood come Halloween, mind you I have a special tactic for dealing with that, I buy laxative chocolate and give them some of that instead. Makes me happy knowing they'll get blamed for eating too many treats.Funny

How to deal with those Watch Tower sellers requires very little thought on the other hand, I borrow the neighbours dog and dress him up as 'devil dog'.

Re: Cold Callers moneyexpert.com knocking on doors

"Bing bong"

Front door bolt slides back and heavy oak door creaks open...

"Hello, can I interest you in ..."

"Of course you can, we don't get many callers here nowadays, not since the infection at least... but don't you worry we not infectious now."

Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

'Knock Knock'

Key turns and door opens to reveal me butt naked

"Oh sorry to disturb you, I'll call another day"

"Sure you can"

Door shuts - I'll be waiting!  Thumbs Up

Re: Cold Callers moneyexpert.com knocking on doors

Haven't had any cold callers here for a long while, think the last lot were canvassers for the British Heart Foundation, quite amusing really, I was sat in my shed, they saw me, but proceeded to knock on the door instead, not exactly bright there..... Crazy

Re: Cold Callers moneyexpert.com knocking on doors

Our front door open outwards so people are already making a retreat as we open it.

I treat the front door a bit like I do the telephone; just because someone knocks on it doesn't mean I have to answer it. If it is family/friends they will ring to see where I am.

SWMBO nearly breaks her neck everytime there's a knock at the door by rushing down the stairsRoll eyes She then gets embroiled in a conversation whereas I just give a polite 'not interested' and close the door. Oh, no eye contact seems to make it easierWink
