Re: Closed Thread

Stout is full of iron that's why it was recommended for nursing mothers and those of a weak disposition.

Personally I can't stand beer of any description but then again I gave up drinking at the age of 24 because there were too many headaches hiding in bottles and they always fell into my glass.

Re: Closed Thread

Seem to recall when I was a young lad some elderly women would put a red hot poker in a glass of Guinness, anyone else ever remember that ?

I've never seen that. Any idea of the reasoning behind it?

Re: Closed Thread

True story.....

A neighbour of ours went to the doctor and got the usual health question...

One question being, ‘How much do you drink’....

Replied 6 pints.....

Dr said that seems a reasonable amount in a week.....

Neighbour said......no 6 pints a day......

After that he was on lime and lemonade......cost him similar price to a pint of beer.

.............

Another true story

When my young daughter went to the doctors....he asked her to bend her knees....

Dr said can you not bend them any more......does it hurt.

Daughter said no it doesn’t hurt, my jeans are too tight.

I presume it must have changed the taste in some way, equally it might be they though it changed the taste.

Just curious to know if anyone else had come across that ?

Re: Closed Thread

Perhaps they thought they were dissolving some of the poker into the Guinness - i.e. adding some iron!

Well... possibly because they need a tall glass, otherwise they would fall over .....

Re: Closed Thread

I was thinking of that Poker as well.

But as it's a toxic poison it would then be an elderly lady putting it in someone else's drink.

I'd agree with your first paragraph, but I'm not so sure I'd be too keen on some of your beer choices judging by their names.

Never judge a book by its' cover, the Banana Bread Beer is really nice, as they brew the beer with actual banana bread in the mix, so it comes out nice and flavoursome and a really nice beer with a difference, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding Ale is also a nice one, as it has a nice vanilla flavour to it from the toffee, aswell as other flavours relating to the dessert, but neither beer is actually sweet (cos the yeast ate the sugars of course!), they're just "different"... 😁

As for the Bombardier (also made by the same brewery), that's just a nice all round beer as was advertised by the late great Rik Mayall in his very rude, crude and often naughty way... 🤣

I don't remember that one but I do remember "N E 1 4 A DD?"

Althogh I hardly drink at all I've always liked gin and tonic, and fashion has finally caught up with my (good) taste!

A few years ago Pear Cider was heavily advertised so I thought I'd give it a try; tasted just like apple cider.

Re: Closed Thread

Mentioning both cars and beer here is a bit risky considering the politics of both. MG cars are now made in China snd brewers Greene King have apologised for their origins.

Fortunately my car was made in Abingdon and I quite like either local ales or a glass of Doom Bar.

Named after a local feature near the brewery, which has a certain reputation -

And probably considerably better built than the were during the BL era. Thats when they weren't on strike!
