Climate Change Kids

Quite heartening if not embarrassing for the older generation like myself to read earlier about so many kids protesting about climate change and demanding a clean and safe planet for their future and one we will never see.

Will it make a difference though?

Personally I don't see it m'slef as those that can make a change and stop sucking the life out of our planet never will, hand in  symbiotic hand as corporations and governments are along with events that simply cannot be stopped - well not until there is nothing left and the human race finally fades from the face of the earth. Oh we can all feel better and recycle, use our cars less, stop flying around the world on those holidays (as if) and all the other stuff, but none of it is going to be enough.

Capitalism eh, doomed to failure and taking us all down with it, along with the future.

Re: Climate Change Kids

How many of these protesters I wonder will expect to be driven to their venue in their mother's 4x4?

Maybe if these young people addressed the base cause of the issue, that is, overpopulation, then this is something they could influence in the future.

Let's face it, planet earth will continue by solving the problem for us in the same way aa it coped with the demise of dinosaurs. The temperature changed and many species became extinct. This time it will be the human race. Not if but when. Try reading The Revenge of  Gaia by James Lovelock.

Re: Climate Change Kids

As one very wise viewer on our local news said - 'i hope those kids all walked to the demonstrations' - priceless.

Problem is young minds make easy targets for lefties and greenies, everything is black and white to kids, they think you can just stop the world and clean it up.  In UK we probably contribute 1% of global carbon,  those kids need to go to China and Brazil to demonstrate - good luck with that.  The EU is not blamless,  was not too long ago that they were importing palm oil and ethanol from third world countries to mix with 'bio diesel' and petrol,  this encouraged widespread destruction of rainforest to planr cash crops that weren't even for food....

We need to curb our addiction to cheap air travel, cruises, out of season goods from halfway around the world shipped by air and sea and holidays abroad if we are going to make even a dent in carbon footprint.

Re: Climate Change Kids

It did cross my mind after I posted that although we are the main cause of the problem, we are all part of it - even the kids themselves

Not to blame them as the older generation started it, but how many I wonder would dumped their mobile phones containing as they do many of earth's rare elements?

Just a thought.

Why must it be either one or the other, and what point are you trying to make shutter.

Leave things as they are and hope against hope for change, or give the system a good boot up the backside? :cheesy:

Re: Climate Change Kids

@Minivanman  I was making a point, that capitalism means progress.... like it or not... there are plenty of left wing parties, and affiliations thereof, have all made their "subjects" worse off, both financially, and physically.

The recent series of programs on "War Factories" proves the fact that a capitalist economy will work for the better of the country, rather than the other, and because of that we, and the americans, outproduced  war materials compared to the German Nazi organised economy.

As for the future... well...nobody worried about mine, when I was young,   and I don`t seem to have suffered greatly, in fact, I have had a pretty good life, compared to people born in the 19th century... and I suspect, that those people had a better life than those in the 18th century,  etc   etc..

Going on about "climate change kids"... is just a gimmick, that the kids enjoy, cos it`s a good way to get a day off school, and have some fun.... nothing they will do, on that day, or any other, will make a blind bit of difference.. so it is a "publicity" stunt of sorts, which the "green" parties will jump on the bandwagon as quick as they can. to self promote their candidates into cushy jobs, with high salaries,... and will they be thinking of those kids that got them there?  NO you can be sure of that... all they will be thinking about is how to stay where they are at the next election to continue their "green" credentials.

Oh , by the way... I am non-political person ! ! !...

I just accept whatever comes along, knowing that a minion such as myself will have little infulence on world events, the way the wind blows or the sun shines...

Ever tried to stop it raining   ?   if so,... you will know how easy it is to control climate change...

That's just it. I believe the majority of those kids are being steered and used by people with a vested interest.

Irrespective of your views on this topic the God of money and greed will always win as his supporters are well rewarded and have the funds to protect themselves if things go pear shaped.

Re: Climate Change Kids

Cynicism is rife in this forum.

We've known for many years about global warming but done virtually nothing.

Must be a bit galling when your kids have to tell you this.

I find it sad that (mainly) supposedly grown men are so threatened by youngsters holding them to account for their selfishness, greed and inaction that they feel the need to try to attack, belittle and patronize these kids at every opportunity, and I'm not just talking about this forum...

Re: Climate Change Kids

Neither capitalism nor socialism or any other ism is the cause of our climatic problems. I think you'll find that all have caused pollution on our behalf, that being the human race. It's too easy to point fingers at those whose views we reject, to grandstand against air travel, if we do not wish or need to make use, to excoriate those who use a car instead of public transport, when abiding in a location with plentiful public transport.

In short, we have to look to ourselves to own responsibility for improving the situation. OK, the things we can do will probably be puny, but every little helps, as the saying goes.

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

Re: Climate Change Kids

I take it you have seen the rise in pollution levels, warming, and all else that climbed dramatically since the dawn of the industrial revolution. Check 'em out and you will see there is a direct an unequivocal correlation.

And who started off that revolution?

Err... we did here in the UK.

Of course it's "the human race" as that is also linked to the rise of capitalism, population and the dramatic growth of consumer societies around the globe.

"The industrial revolution marked a major turning point in Earth’s ecology and humans’ relationship with their environment... "

Oh what the heck, here you go.  :buck2:

The trouble is of course and as way back then, 'they' are not.
