Re: Click Drones Special

I was looking at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park site with a view to visiting and watched their promo video which led me to this company site http://skeyebv.com/services/aerial-video/
Some really good footage on there.

Re: Click Drones Special

I can't help but think quadcopters are incredibly BORING!
I prefer the old fashioned type RC helicopters - proper swashplates, variable rotors, nitro engines... far superior in every way.

I still have fun with my little quadcopter bought for me as a Christmas present.
I never progressed beyond relatively small electric single rotor helicopters.

What are you on about now?
Single rotor choppers can be used with cameras, they just have to have shock / vibration absorbing mounts. They also have superior radio range, altitude and manouverability to quad copters.

Re: Click Drones Special

They're also expensive and more difficult to fly. Quadcopters lower the barrier to entry.

Re: Click Drones Special

when I was watching a program a while back the beeb's resident geek and licenced drone operator was explain why they went with a quad copter instead of the in many ways superior older generation of rotary aircraft available, and he said it was after trials on various platforms they went with the quad because it provided a more stable platform whilst airborne and it was only limited in operating range because of licence restrictions on the size of fuel tank permissible, what with it having superior lifting capability over more traditional helicopter variants which tended to struggle under the camera's additional weight far more and were affected by the elements far more .....

I've never seen a nitro engined quad. To my knowledge they do not exist. If they do they will be incredibly specialist due to the engine tuning and setup of the carburettor. Twin engined nitro planes are difficult enough to setup yet alone a quad engined vtol chopper.

Re: Click Drones Special

many of the quad copters being used are single engine with multiple drive shafts running off a central gear box which makes them much simpler, some of them also use a derivative of rocket fuel although as far as I can tell there mainly in the specialist 50k + bracket

Re: Click Drones Special

How do you independently control each rotor if they're shaft driven off a single engine/box?

Re: Click Drones Special

I doubt it - nitro engines introduce the very thing you claim the quads are so popular for - instability. The engines shake like a jack hammer. Even a google image search for "nitro quadcopter" revealed only one and that was a home build prototype - not a commercial kit.

You'd need a variable pitch rotor like the tail rotor of a normal RC helicopter. Instead of tilting the cylic disc however it would simply need up/down control.

That said, the black hornet has a revolutionary (yet idiotically simple) swashplate design:
