City Link goes into administration

Hi All
Just seen this:
[quote="BBC"]
City Link parcel delivery company goes into administration

Parcel delivery company City Link, which employs 2,727 people, has gone into administration.
The Coventry-based company, owned by investment firm Better Capital, called in administrators on Christmas Eve after "substantial losses".
RMT union general secretary Mick Cash told the BBC: "The way it's happened... that on Christmas Day they've done this to our members is disgraceful."
Administrators warned of "substantial redundancies" over the coming days.
This is because no buyer has been found to save the company.
A number of staff will be retained to help return parcels to customers and help with winding down the company, said administrators Ernst & Young.
City Link has stopped accepting parcels from customers at its head office and transport hub in Coventry, its three other transport hubs and 53 UK depots.

It's actually even worse for the staff - many will have finance/lease of their vans to cope with, don't know what the proportion is but City Link were keen on owner/drivers (as are many couriers).  http://www.city-link.co.uk/ownerdrivers/

That is Shocking Shocked
[Edit]
The City Link web site does not say anything about been in administration, that is really shocking Shocked

Yeah, I saw that last night. What a sh*tty way to end the year, considering we were hearing on the news about the boom in online sales only the other day you would have thought this kind of job was safe.

Re: City Link goes into administration

sadly its fashionable to now go into admin right after christmas trade, I think for obvious reasons to get that quick festive cash grab before closing up.
Whats bad about this is citylink as far as I kow are the only courier to offer hourly estimations of delivery aside from DPD.  The bargain basement courier companies getting 90% of trade, hermes and yodel.

Having spent about 21 years in the sameday courier business ( closed my one man business 9 years ago) I really feel sorry for these guys.

Re: City Link goes into administration

Do I need to answer, you asked about post xmas admin's I gave you a list, so why would they be different parts of the year?
over 300 companies with 1million+ turnover have gone bust in the past 5 years, it seems to be one's with retail links that have a habit of doing it in late dec or january.

Re: City Link goes into administration

Quite a few of these folded in December/January.
This article explains quite simply why Christmas is the right time to call in the receivers.
