Re: Chilly, Willy Weather

We had to renew the battery on our Freelander after a cold morning diesel engine start failure a few days ago. According to the battery tech it was the original battery with 92,000 on the clock.

Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Chilly, Willy Weather

In the end, I just placed the Jazz 12v battery on charge overnight, in situ.

Started no problems this warmer morning, Heated Seats & Air Con switched off.

It was noticeably quicker to unlock the doors too.

The Hybrid Jazz 12v battery is 43 months old, and has powered the Jazz for just 9,000 miles.

AFAIK it is not one of the newer Stop-Start batteries, and so is not designed to cope  with the Automatic Engine Stop - Starting which places heavy demands on the 12v battery !

Perhaps as many as ten times per journey, and with each journey quite local, doesn't get chance to fully charge up.

Will get it tested this morning, but I think for peace of mind I will just change the 12v battery every 3 years, just before the cold weather, as they seem to have a reputation for failing when it's really cold.

Works out at only 8p / day.

I also made a note of the Radio Code too.

Update 10:00

Battery tested....... REPLACE !!

Booked into Honda for replacement, as it is a 12v battery in a Hybrid car, it has to be replaced by Honda.

Only £20 more than at local Kwikfit, and they do a full safety check.

Battery replaced by Honda this morning, discounted price as I have a Service Plan.

It feels to me like the Jazz now has more Oomph !

Possibly because the Jazz is not trying to charge a knackered battery ?

Just in time, more freezing weather due here in the next few days.

The Jazz has definitely got more Oomph since the 12v battery change

As for the weather, after a few days of ridiculously warm weather, day & night, the cold returns with a vengeance this Thursday, with Sleet predicted for Saturday

Re: Chilly, Willy Weather

Yeah on my Merc I think the battery might be dead, especially now with this weather.

The thing is a monster, I remember having to change it with a friend last time. It was a stuggle for two of us two lift it.

May be because we're really unfit, but saves going to the gym

Luckily I have a car spares shop round the corner from where I live, so was only a 6-7 min walk, but that was painful enough.

Perhaps you could have also home charged the battery, and after a couple of hours enough charge to start the engine, and drive round to the accessory shop ?

Whereas my Jeep has a Battery Voltage monitor, my Jazz does not.

So I bought a couple of these off ebay, they work a treat.

Re: Chilly, Willy Weather

Absolutely freezing last night gas on all night and today by the looks of things. Thick frost through the night and snow where I live this morning. Don' think there will be much snow for me though.

As forecast, overnight here it was a very cold -3.4ºC

Cars windscreens all frozen up, apart from the Jeeps !!

Perhaps they use different thermal co-efficient glass ?

I've noticed this before, the Jeep windscreen is rarely frozen over.

Anyway, all fully defrosted/defrozen now, in case we need to go out, though the plan is to stay in, by the Log Fire !!

Totally clear deep blue sky, as you would expect with no cloud cover.

And the Hills & Valley are all green, the morning sun has defrosted all.

Re: Chilly, Willy Weather

I recorded a low of -0.6 degrees C at 02:50 this morning.

Maybe the breeze picks up a little warmth from the centre of Sheffield to the north of us where it was just above freezing.

Re: Chilly, Willy Weather

We've even had flurries in Lincolnshire this morning. I can't remember the last time is snowed here in November. I know in 2010 it snowed overnight on the 9th Dec as we could get out the village and were due down south for a Christmas do but didn't make it.

Re: Chilly, Willy Weather

Was snowing a bit in South East London yesterday. Only a bit, and nothing has settled yet.
