Channel 4 on Freesat will cease HD transmissions on Thursday 22nd February

Channel 4 is pulling the High Definition version of its main channel and the All4 catch-up app from Freesat later this week, with the broadcaster blaming “a very significant” increase in the fees levied by Freesat for its decision.

The Freesat EPG shows no programmes on Channel 4 HD after Thursday

It will still be available on Freeview HD though.

Time to reset all Freesat Channel 4 HD timer recordings to the SD channel, 104.

(Easy way, add channel 104 to your favourites, then add programmes from other sources, such as Radio Times)

I always double bank on Freeview HD anyway.

Channel 4 HD on SKY will be unaffected.

Maybe the BBC should share some of that license fee.

Re: Channel 4 on Freesat will cease HD transmissions on Thursday 22nd February

Channel 4 is not often watched by us, as much is not to our taste.

That said, it seems unseemly short notice they are giving, one that suggests that viewers lead perfect 9 to 5 daily existences, so are able to reset their equipment at once. Life now for many is not like that. A lot of folk are away days or weeks on end.

The company's lack of consideration for its viewers is either crass, or (perish the thoughtRoll eyes) has it  perhaps been encouraged by other sources?Undecided

We don't use freesat only freeview and frankly if they're going to scare away broadcasters like that we won't bother either!

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

I hear what you are saying, but in our case, Freesat is essential for some of the time.

We are surrounded by very tall trees, and in very wet or snowy weather the Freeview signal through the trees is poor. It can be abysmal.

These days, though, we do have on demand, which in the case of the BBC iPlayer is excellent, HD and no adverts.

And we are blessed with a 19mb/s copper connection.

Re: Channel 4 on Freesat will cease HD transmissions on Thursday 22nd February

I don't buy C4 excuses.

FS EPG listing fees are only £40k PA, and C4 made record revenue last year,  and paid their former CEO a £250k bonus on his £500k salary off the back of it, and why are they only pulling the HD channel, why not all the pointless +1s if it's really about saving money?

If there'd been a significant increase I'm sure the lesser channels would have been leaving en masse and we'd of been hearing about it before now.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if greed is at play here on C4s part, and that they'd done a deal with Sky as they have for the other HD channels.

Personally I think they need a reminder they're a publicly owned PSB, and what they're doing is anti public service. I hope it hurts them in the long run.

Only the SD channels are subject to the Public Service Obligation.

I know that but, C4 is still a publicly owned, not for profit PSB and what they're doing is a [-Censored-] anti public service move AFAIAC...

@DaveyH i too think their action totally wrong in its execution.

According to Investopedia, a  "Not for profit describes a type of organization that does not earn profits for its owners. All of the money earned by or donated to a not-for-profit organization is used in pursuing the organization's objectives and keeping it running".

What it does not say is that it shall not take any action to prevent its earnings net of costs being reduced.

Unprincipled. unworthy, but not unlawful.

I guess channel 4 are interpreting "not for profit" to mean more money to share out for the top nobs.

Might want to read up on C4's PSB remit:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_4#Public_service_remit

Nothing mentioned about "Channel 4 must provide High Definition satellite channels"... Smiley
