Re: Catchy Name for a Home Server

Slightly confused here; why does a Home server require a unique public domain name?
PS Seeing as you're dyslexic, why not a jokey smelling pistake?
(and yes, I know that's actually a spoonerism......)

Re: Catchy Name for a Home Server

As it is a HOME SERVER, what difference would it make if you used (for example) ".me.uk" instead of ".co.uk" ?
The cost of registering and maintaining a ".me.uk" or ".org.uk" domain is the same as a ".co.uk",  at around £2.99 per year.
In addition, you could initially register say "midnightcaller.me.uk", so you can start receiving emails as "gary @midnightcaller.me.uk",
but once you get it all running nicely you could in the future add as many other domains as you like for say public facing websites, etc.

Re: Catchy Name for a Home Server

I see your new domain http://midnightcaller.me.uk is now active and is redirected to your DHEA Forum.
When are you going to start on your home server project ?  and will the home server be a different website ?

Re: Catchy Name for a Home Server

Have you got a webserver installed yet Gary?
If not I highly recommend the uniformserver (assuming you're on XP) which seems to run pretty well. Xampp is also another good one but it requires a lot more disk space. I've no idea how either of them fare on Vista or W7 but a friend of mine couldn't get uniformserver to run on vista.
I wouldn't install apache, php and mysql seperately, it's a lot of hassle and can be quite fiddly.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
