Part of Catalonia's grievance is that they pay more to Madrid than they get back. According to today's Sunday Times 1700 firms have already left the region and relocated elsewhere. My Spanish bank has already moved its headquarters to Alicante.

Yes, we know all about paying in more than we get back, don't we?  Have the firms physically moved, or have they just registered a non-Catalan address as their HQ?  If the latter is the case, not many Catalan jobs would have been lost.

Re: Catalonia is Independent

When a number of eastern European countries joined the EU, the gypsies from those countries who'd been granted asylum in the UK, were told that it was not possible to seek asylum in one EU country by claiming persecution in another, and they would therefore lose their refugee status and the benefits that went with it.  They were subsequently given a temporary extension which, I suspect, in practice meant keeping their status in perpetuity.

So why is it now possible for Belgium to consider giving asylum to Catalan politicians?
