(Sometimes Iceland considers itself part of Europe, other times as part of the USA............then again Icelanders consider themselves independent)

Best of all worlds I guess - nice to be independent Wink

The car hire in question was in Iceland, I'd been given a company car for my stay and wanted to rent something for the final week, in the end decided against.

The hotel I was staying at in Iceland was used by a tour operator specialising in 4x4 self drive touring holidays. I overheard a briefing a couple was getting and they were told that if the came to a ford/stream across the road to wait until a local arrive to see if it safe to cross as it could be a few inches deep or a few feet. Problem was you could be waiting several hours/days for a local to turn up.

Re: Car Hire - option on CDW

Just checked my car hire for my trip to Spain next month and similar to the US car hire there is no excess.  I think it's a case of finding the right company to hire from.

I'm surprised that there is no excess in Spain. Couple of days ago I booked a car with Hertz for Switzerland and there is an excess and it would have been the same if I have used Avis.

I think it depends on the country.  Hertz is one of the companies I use in the US and they don't have an excess there.

Re: Car Hire - option on CDW

CDW is included on most car rentals but it will have an excess, usually around €1500. Best to  purchase an Multitrip annual policy if you are renting for more them a week.

Re: Car Hire - option on CDW

We always opt for CDW when driving abroad, no excess, whatever the cost.

A few years back driving in Portugal, along a seafront dual carriageway, some prat in a Mercedes sport car, drove into the back of us, as we approached slow moving traffic.

Getting out of the car, I immediately took photos of the car, and driver.

He kept saying "No speak English"

I rang the insurer, told them what had happened, and passed the phone over to the other driver.

There followed a discussion in Portuguese.

Speaking again to the Insurer, they said it's taken care of, just drive away, which we did.

There was no charge, and no comeback.
