Can coffee bring a plane down ?

Incident report from earlier in the year shows a Airbus A330 with 337 passengers on board had to be dirverted to the nearest airport after coffee spilt on the APC controls which started to melt.

Seems there was no policy that that lids should have been used on the cups.

A simple accident could have resulted in a major disaster.

Re: Can coffee bring a plane down ?

Considering the cost of these aircraft you would think the control panels would be liquid proof.  I bet Boeing have made theirs proof against wayward coffee which is always a hazzard in cockpits as pilots need plenty of caffiene to stay awake during time zone changes. To be honest no paper cup with a clip on lid is truly spill proof especially if thrown around by turbulence,  for that you need a plastic one with a screw on lid.

This prompts another question,  do aircraft cabins have cup-holders...

Also, why are we only hearing about this now?

This makes a mocha-ry  of the control panel design...  This could be 'grounds' to sue the plane maker.

@twocvbloke

Although I knew Gallium was a metal, I didn't understand the relevance of your post but Mr. Google helped me out, and now I see what you mean!  Thumbs_Up

Re: Can coffee bring a plane down ?

@wotsup  The plane did have cup holders - but the pilots said they were too big for the cup and made it difficult to get out.

@nozzer  having read that report.... I am surprised that a recommendation to install hand held VHF airband transcievers in the cockpit, for emergency use, was not made.

@shutter

Yes, it does seem a bit surprising. Maybe they don't have enough range?

Re: Can coffee bring a plane down ?

I may be be wrong but I seem to recall that the one I had on my (very) small fishing boat was limited to line of sight. It was how I used it anyway.
