Re: Bye, Bye Dave...

In other words, he didn't get his way, so he's throwing a tantrum.

Wonder who's offered him a directorship?

Re: Bye, Bye Dave...

How can he quit the House of Commons and remain a MP ?

I thought the role of a MP was to represent those who voted for him, how can he do that if he quits the commons ?

Re: Bye, Bye Dave...

It may well be down to the quality of life he's had since leaving office and he wants more if it, so who can blame him. Or maybe he's clearing the decks to do a TB and get on the 'circuit', either way I don't care, I won't miss him.

Re: Bye, Bye Dave...

Since 1624 it's been against the law for an MP to give up his seat wilfully.

But since the Act of Settlement of 1701, if an MP accepted an 'office of profit' under the crown, they became disqualified from their seat in the commons.

So this became an accepted loophole for MPs wanting to give up their seats, and the traditional office awarded to them is Steward and Bailiff of the Chiltern Hundreds - in reality a non-existent job.

A 'hundred' is an old fashioned name for a division within a county, which could raise a hundred men to fight for the crown. The Chiltern Hundreds have been Crown property since the 13th Century

The other non-office frequently used to allow MPs to step down is Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead.

He had said when he resigned as PM that he would stay on until the General Election. He has now decided to stand down and trigger a by-election.

Is he not well? Having to be carried.

Maybe he's standing down due to illness.
