Building sites

Like many people I'm fascinated with the goings on on large building sites. I was parked up yesterday alongside a large industrial build, watching two tower cranes operating. And I wondered that if there is a very large counter-weight to balance any object being lifted fixed to the short arm of the jib, why doesn't the whole thing over-balance backwards when there is nothing being lifted?
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Building sites

It is fascinating watching large cranes, when I moved to MK there was lots of the main office/shopping complex being built so you could see from a fair distance, never seen one erected though.
At Christmas they used to put lights and trees on them.

Re: Building sites

I'm impressed the operator can work the controls, when they're so far away from what is actually being lifted.
Do they need binoculars Smiley

I'm sure they have someone on the geound communicating by radio but you probably do need good eyesight too.

Re: Building sites

When I was a child I was told that the building was often built around the crane then that space was used as a lift shaft - any truth in this?

Well, from what I've seen (and they always seem to be putting them up somewhere in London), the lift shaft is the first thing which is constructed.

Re: Building sites

When I was a lad they used to dig deep holes, drop in the vertical stones, slide horizontal ones across the top and dig away all the soil to reveal a building.
