Re: Broadband rip off & 'fast' broadband by 2020

We're the poor man of Europe when it comes to broadband.
Interesting range of comments. I particularly liked:-
"We should pay my broadband supplier, every month, 20p per Mbps.  That way, the suppliers are incentivised to provide as much capacity as possible. They want big profits? Get the Mbps up. Service tied to reward. Simple."
But incentives aren't needed when you can just put the price up on a whim even when standards are falling.

I can only speak of Spain and France and we have cheaper prices and better speeds.

The news was about future plans for broadband.
Though "future plans" tend to change more than wind direction.
Maybe because say Spain and France's broadband isn't so good they have more of an incentive to improve.

Perhaps I should have said - regarding broadband we will be the poor man of Europe in the future.
But as I was already talking in the context of the article...................................
I left the obvious unsaid.

All free market countries have the same problem, there is no payback for rural broadband. I don't thing the UK is/will be any worst than Europe or the USA.

I'd pay a lot more for a half decent speed (currently average download of 1MB).
When we lived near Þórsmörk (Iceland) we hed broadband and telephone reception by radio (not sure of the technology, but its a small aerial on the side of the house beamed from an antenna 20 kms away), Phone line rental and unlimited Broadband at around 20MB was around £50 per month, which I consider good value.

@'journeys' - do you remember what sort of latency you had when using wireless broadband ?.

I'm quite happy with 66Mbits/sec - thats about 8 Mbytes/sec
But not many servers can keep up.  Cheesy

I got a speed test from Plusnet last week, just over 9 Mb speed, that'll do nicely even if I do live more than 3.5 KM from the exchange at Intake.

I'm around 2/3 of that distance, RichAllen, and only get a quite flaky 5-6Mbps.
