British history gets re-written...?

Dam Busters dog renamed for movie remake
Quote
Stephen Fry, who is writing the film's screenplay, said there was "no question in America that you could ever have a dog called the N-word".
In the remake, the dog will be called "Digger" instead of "Nigger".

Quote
"You can go to RAF Scampton and see the dog's grave and there he is with his name, and it's an important part of the film.
"The name of the dog was a code word to show that the dam had been successfully breached.

If it's an important part of the film why change it?
I can't believe that sensible, level-headed people would be offended.
Can't see me wanting to see it anyway -  how they can top the 1955 version - excellent stuff.

Oh yes they would if they are American.
Remember the US politician who was heavily criticised for describing an action as niggardly

The point is, and also made by Stephen Fry, is the dog is not important in the film. The film is about the Dam Busters, not the dog.

Re: British history gets re-written...?

Actually Stephen Fry is quoted as saying that the dog's role was an important part of the film.
However, they are not saying that they are going to omit the dog's role and the key way it reflected on the emotions of the men involved.
I think we are so used to americanised versions of our history being distorted that I can't blame anyone who gets concerned that this may be another example.

There are not many dogs that get their own entry in Wikipedia.
