Re: Breaking News for Notre Dame

Been around it like many of course, and even did a restuarant cruise around it once with Bateaux Parisiens.

Magical, and for all the right reasons. Wink

Re: Breaking News for Notre Dame

Terribly sad indeed; it's irreplaceable. Sadder still are some readers' comments about Brexit, Christianity and Muslims, and not in the  usual rags.

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

Re: Breaking News for Notre Dame

Henry VI of England was crowned king of France in Notre-Dame in 1431.

Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned emperor in ND in 1804.

Joan of Arc was beatified there by Pope Pius X in 1909.

Charles de Gaulle went there almost immediately Paris was liberated 1945.

.... and I stood in front of it in 2005.  Roll eyes

Such sad news, and it's going to take years of restoration work to put it back into some sort of shape. I wonder how much of the stained glass was lost. That rose stained window was a wonder to behold and reminded me of the one we looked at in Reims Cathédrale many years back which is also called Notre-Dame. We had to wait a couple of hours for the sun to come around and light it up. Just amazing.

Re: Breaking News for Notre Dame

Sad true but who knows, maybe a blessing in disguise. I think it always strange when these events happen during ongoing restoration work. But you never know It could end up like Windsor castle has after that caught fire. I went to the castle not that long ago and the rebuild / restoration work, time and effort is quite something to see. Thumbs Up Hopefully ND will end up the same, good for another 800 years.

Sure I'd love to help you out. Now which way did you come in?

Re: Breaking News for Notre Dame

Did some work in that castle in the exact same spot the fire broke out!

Cannot recall the date, but by all accounts it was the first time the German ambassador had been to the UK since the second world war and that tower section was being tarted up for his visit. Has some great fun having a good nose around the place while I was there. Amazing.

Re: Breaking News for Notre Dame

It's a shame, where will the hunchback live now.

When questions start getting asked it will all come down to cost cutting. With all the wood supports in these old buildings and towers extra care with fire prevention should have been taken. I wonder what the watchmen/guards will have to say. I assume there was some on constant around the clock watch to keep an eye on things. Or was it treated like just any other deserted building site. More trusted to luck than anything else.
