My father was born on 26th Dec 1900 and worked in a bank so I had this fact drummed into me as a child  Roll eyes

Re: Boxing Day is not today

It surely depends on which definition you choose to use?
The modern/current Boxing Day Bank/Public holiday is not today, but the traditional Boxing Day is the day after Christmas Day.
Your dad, as a banker, would probably be referring to the Bank Holiday.  Wink

Re: Boxing Day is not today

According to Google Calendar on my phone, next Monday (4th Jan) is 2nd Jan in Scotland (same reason/logic as Boxing day being today/Monday).

Monday is "Boxing Day (substitute day)".

Traditionally the Scottish holiday was the first 3 working days of the New Year (nothing to do with whichever date). When I was young (!) there was no Christmas holiday is Scotland but when Christmas Day became one the new year holiday was reduced to the first 2 working days. The date has never mattered though.

When I lived in Scotland - we had Scottish and English bank holidays - as the HQ office in England was closed when England and not Scotland had different holidays  Grin

Re: Boxing Day is not today

If I remember rightly (and yeah, I could google but that's cheating), it's called Boxing day because way back yonder it is when people would give staff/rubbish collectors etc. a "box", usually with money in it, as a tip, in a box, hence boxing day, and nothing to do with a bank holiday?
