Baking

What with The Great British Bake Off back in full swing , i was wondering what others like to bake?
I have tried baking in the past, i must admit i am pretty awful, although i can bake a banana cake , and flapjack ( if that counts as baking)
I really enjoy watching the The Great British Bake Off , and Dragons Den, i think they are the best two shows on TV at the moment.

Re: Baking

The first thing that came to mind was an episode of Mrs Brown's Boys where she baked a cake in her new microwave.
I'd post a link but the language would be far more fruity than her cake.
Sadly cakes are cheaper to buy than make but I used to love doing tarts with various fillings and mince pies.
Now you've mentioned it I might do some this week after shopping Smiley

Scale of economies though - the more things you bake, the cheaper it is (but you need to buy bulk - like Costco style). Flour is 50%+ cheaper than supermarkets if you buy a big 16 or 25kg sack.
I do a heck of a lot of baking, in fact too much baking. The downside is you've always got lots to eat and it's not usually the healthiest.

Re: Baking

I can't cook let alone bake, but I can only manage to heat stuff up.  But my sister is good at it, Carrot cake that even I like[fussy eater] / Pina Colade / Banana Loaf, then the family favourite hot crumble with apple or rhubarb.

Re: Baking

I think the TV programmes like Masterchef/Great British Bakeoff have been great to get people back into or started with cooking and baking. I think ready availability of pretty much everything from supermarkets has meant many younger people simply don't know how to cook.
There's an increasing number of artisan bakeries that have started up and the majority of them do courses. Here are some of the well known ones - http://www.shipton-mill.com/the-mill/our-friends/baking-and-cookery-schools £50-100 for an evening's course is well worth it - it's entertaining and you learn something new.

Re: Baking

I used to love cooking and baking.
My favourite was a rich fruit cake. Sometimes even covering with marzipan and icing. Another favourite was/is pineapple upside cake?
I don't cook/bake these days and have passed my recipes to SWMBO who actually produces better results than I did.

Re: Baking

You can buy a pizza oven for £100 or so now (G3 Ferrari Home Pizza Express) - it's really good for neapolitan style pizzas because it gets so hot. It will cook the pizza in 60-90 secs.
Just as good as you can get in a restaurant - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiVi7jvESPM
