Bakelite box attached to door frame

We're due to have our front door replaced in around 6 weeks time. On the current door frame is a bakelite box, with wires leading out. Now we're not sure whether these are still live or redundant, as we recently had the master socket relocated. Thing is there's no way they'll be able to fit the new door without disturbing the wiring.

Re: Bakelite box attached to door frame

@BakerJon

Bakelite box....... ?   hmm... sounds interesting... maybe take it off, and wait until "Flog-it" comes to town....

Bakelite was the pre plastic, so it`s definitely into the "antique" world....

Apart from that... it could be a door bell ?   Or a load of other things...

Take a pic or two, and upload them to your thread, and maybe someone will be able to help identify it for you...

You could also trace where those "wires leading out"  go to and from...  which may also help to identify if it is "current" or not  ! .

Re: Bakelite box attached to door frame

I assume the box and wires relate to your phone ?

Whoever moved the master socket should be able to advise you if those wires are live or not....

If you are unsure what the wires are connected to and you are talking about house wiring then an electrician is the person to contact.

Re: Bakelite box attached to door frame

As @shutter suggests, post picture of the box (including the wires?) so we can have a better idea.

Many here with long memories of such things if indeed it is bakelite.

Sounds like some sort of junction box t'me but strange it should be attached to a door frame if it is.

Re: Bakelite box attached to door frame

No-one has asked the obvious question - but are the wires attached to anything, or cut off near the box?

@BakerJon Welcome to the forum. 🙂

Sounds intriguing. There are quite a few techie people on the forum, so if you post a picture or two, we should be able to give you some info.

No responses from the o.p.  so probably a spam message....  Lips_are_sealed

More likely @shutter the poster has worked it out for themselves,

Very likely, @shutter  - they haven't been back since 2240 that night, even though there were replies that night. Having said that, the number of 'newbies' that turn up, post, then evaporate, is amazing.

Or the KGB came and collected their listening device, taking the OP with them.

We’ve been helping them via Twitter. Smiley

Should hopefully be clarified that it looks to be redundant.
