BT's Whitespace trial looks promising for hermits.

BT have been running a trial using "white space" in the TV frequencies to provide broadband to remote communities.  An article here:  http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/373807/bt-white-space-works-if-you-re-not-hung-up-on-speed
Might be useful for the crofters if they don't want to pull fibre through the bogs (FTTB).

Yeah, it is interesting however that is it, it provides just one 8Mb connection at that range, which technically is impressive. But if you had to start sharing that between 4 or 8 others in that 8 mile radius, it is not so great. Of course though, if these are all people who currently have no connection at all, it is an improvement.
