BT now charges for 1571 – opt out if you don't use it

Quote
BT customers began being charged for its previously-free 1571 answerphone and caller display services on Saturday. So opt out now if you have either of these services and don't use them, or you'll be charged £1.75/month for each – that's £42/year for bot

BT's upping other charges too
Alongside charging for 1571 and Caller Display, the telecoms giant is hiking some of its other charges. Key changes include:
Line rental. This is up to £15.99 from £15.45/month.
Daytime calls to UK landlines and 0870 numbers. Will rise from 8.41p/minute to 8.95p/minute.
Evening calls to UK landlines and 0870 numbers. Will rise from 1.11p/minute to 1.18p/minute.

I got rid of my 1571. Why should I have to pay BT for 1571.
Not our fault they paid millions for BT Sport

The BT that are ripping people off, are not the BT that TT rent off, you have BT retail the ISP/Phone people, and BTOR which everyone rents exchange space/equipment off, including BT retail. Though they are both owned by BT group but operate seperately. i think BT need to lok at charging for sport, or people who are not interested will go where the better deals are, like i have done.

If PN charged for 1571 and reduced their line rental by the same amount I might still have my telephone with them.  Wink

This was the final straw for us, prompting the move to Plusnet for the phone.
The first we knew of it was seeing additional charges added to the latest BT phone bill.

Re: BT now charges for 1571 – opt out if you don't use it

If PN started to charge for 1571 I would cancel it. We have a built in answering service on our DCT phone although I have never used it (SWMBO did once or twice but 1571 kicks in first now).
It wouldn't bother me if we didn't have any sort of answering service. I can always ring friends/family back having seen their number and people can always try again anyway. I turned off voicemail on my mobile yonks ago.

Re: BT now charges for 1571 – opt out if you don't use it

I know PN stops the built in caller ID and built in number block on outgoing calls, on my phone unless I pay for it, and wonder if it is the same for the answerphone (will be interesting to find out)
