Question: What do the following websites have in common?
smallcapnews.co.uk (this one)
www.apronworld.co.uk
www.worldofwillow.co.uk
Answer: If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is BT you are likely to receive a "site not found" message rather than arrive on the site's home page. These sites can be found using other ISP's but since BT has a significant share of the UK broadband provision space a large portion of the UK browsing community will be unable to access these sites even though they are very much alive and open for business.
This problem, which is a Domain Name Server (DNS) issue at BT's end has been affecting our website since Tuesday 2nd March, and from the increasingly anxious postings on BT's own community page, it has been affecting a lot more .c.uk websites than the few mentioned above.
Web developers are reporting that they are receiving angry calls from clients saying they and their customers are unable to access email and the .co.uk websites if BT is their ISP.
"I am phoning BT every day", "after spending 3 hours on the phone to BT" are some of the comments on the BT community forum.
Having never had a good experience calling BT, I have opted recently for their online support chat and usually the individual on the other side has been helpful. I was given a workaround where I had to change my internet settings to a specic DNS number from "automatically find a DNS number". This worked for me but what seems to be lost on BT is that our readers and many other websites customers simply will not bother with the hassle of changing their DNS's, even if they found out that was the problem. They will simply move on to other websites.
There are fixes but BT seems reluctant or perhaps just too disinterested to even put a note on its website acknowledging there is a problem and offering a workaround.
According to NanoTM on the BT Community Forum one way to resolve the issue is by changing your DNS servers to Google's. http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
Is BT doing its bit to help Britain's small entrepreneurs dig the country out of the recession? Quite the opposite in this writer's opinion.
As a free to air website where our income is solely from advertising, we usually get pretty grumpy when our content is cut and pasted onto chatboards etc, but in this case we will make an exception.

Re: BT & Virgin Media DNS Issues?

Must admit I haven't read anything about this yet (will try and have a mosey over lunch) but are you sure it's DNS problems that are preventing access to those sites?
This is what a lookup against our DNS caches returns:
C:\Users\Bobby>nslookup www.apronworld.co.uk 212.159.6.10
Server:  cdns02.plus.net
Address:  212.159.6.10
Non-authoritative answer:
Name:    apronworld.co.uk
Address:  209.200.27.182
Aliases:  www.apronworld.co.uk

And this is BT's according to the information here. All lookups are successful and all lookups return the same IP as our caches Huh
