BT Wiring Curiosity

Just curious really but...
The telephone cable to my house goes into one of these

and then straight into one of these

I was just wondering where the demarcation line was as they are both BT items.

Re: BT Wiring Curiosity

Is the first photo an example, or the actual block in your house? I ask because there should be only two wires going into the master socket.

Re: BT Wiring Curiosity

Well technically they both do the same job, except the lower one has a jack socket, which I think equated to the right side of the upper junction box.
Nice colour carpet Strat!
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

They are both examples.
@Petlew Not mine....I daren't remove mine from the wall as it would probably disintegrate.

Re: BT Wiring Curiosity

Interesting one! The master socket and the terminal box belong to BT. The cable from outside going to the terminal box belong to BT. The cable between the terminal box the the master socket can be classed as internal cabling and this belong to ....?

Re: BT Wiring Curiosity

that top connector box is ancient.  i remember shuffling telephones about and how easy it was and then along came the stupid square boxes you need a special tool for attaching the wires.  saved the fitter time no doubt.

Yup!  But there are still a lot of them about in older premises!  BT do not usually rework the internal configuration unless they have to (or the coffee and chocolate biscuits are liberally dispensed)  It's a real problem trying to get to the bottom of an ADSL problem when the internals just end in  one of the top rectangular boxes.

At the Test Socket behind the removeable faceplate on the NTE5A.  Wink

Re: BT Wiring Curiosity

Our house was built in mid 1970s and until recently had GPO cover plate in hall - replaced now by NTE5a.
Still got one of the connectors, picture one, in lounge - not going to crawl under furniture to see what's on the front. It's part of what were hardwired extensions.

Re: BT Wiring Curiosity

Do you have a larger copy P_P?
Hard to see exactly what you have connected, and there's a pretty reasonable chance that you could improve things with the judicious application of a pair of sidecutters (or a screwdrver if you prefer).
