BT mulls much larger job cuts - report
New chief executive Philip Jansen, who started on 1 February, is mulling a restructuring that would involved axing 25,000 of the group's 100,000 workers over five years, Bloomberg reported.
The plan would involve a greater use of back-office technology, selling off some units and cutting middle management numbers.
In May last year, BT said it planned to cut 13,000 jobs over three years as part of various initiatives to "transform" its operating model, with its recent trading update in January revealing that the plan was on track, with around 800 roles removed in the quarter.
Jansen's predecessor Gavin Patterson, just a month before the guillotine fell on his four-and-a-half-year reign, said at the time the strategy rejig was needed as the former monopoly launches a 'converged' product range, increases its full-fibre broadband network and pays down its £11.3bn pension funding deficit.
With the company's share price then wallowing around a five-year low, chairman Jan du Plessis switched out his CEO under pressure from major shareholders, who were content with the general strategic direction of the company but wanted a new broom in charge.
BT shares were up 1.25% to 225.5p on Wednesday afternoon, around 12% higher than last year's low.

How long before they let PlusNet go, or close it down and take over all PN accounts?

When BT sneezes, PlusNet gets it in the face?
Flu jab or the knackers yard, what's it to be.

Share price is up - less staff = worse service = increased profits.
I think all of BT plans to follow the Plusnet model.

Trouble is who do you turn to? Doesn't matter who you go with, unless you have a connection with another telco, Virgin etc if it's Openreach supplied, you are part of BT.

Hello Everyone
In Northern Ireland Openreach is the new name for the engineering team that build and maintain our broadband network. In other words a new name for British Telecommunications plc (BT) as there is no other company provider to compete with, all our landline is in their hands, broadband providers might come and go but hard to see how anyone on a landline would survive if the Head was cut off.
Sure it will not be long before all BroadbandProviders can ping over the air to us and do away with these outdated landlines
Good luck

I would have thought that Northern Ireland of all places would be an ideal market for an Irish (i.e. from the republic) telecommunications company to compete with BTOR in.

Hello Jonpe
BT Ireland is one of the leading communications and IT services companies in the Republic of Ireland, but don't know of any Republic of Ireland companies up North, An Electric company from the South has a big slice of the market up North.
Good luck

I think BT also has a stake/interest in several other foreign Telecoms companies.
