BBC accused of central belt bias

The BBC said it had no plans for regional TV opt-outs
An MSP has called on the BBC to consider regional opt-outs for its Reporting Scotland news programme.
Brian Adam said the move would increase the amount of local news featured on television broadcasts.
He accused the corporation of focusing on the central belt, to the detriment of other areas of the country. "
Clearly Scottish BBC journalists are just as bad as their English/London colleagues !

Re: BBC not always London or SE Centric

They ought to find out what it's like in Wales.
BBC seems to think that nothing ever happens outside of Cardiff/Swansea/Newport/valleys.
Their calculation of significance seems to go like this:
3 deaths in north Wales = 2 deaths in mid/west Wales = 1 death in Swansea/Newport/valleys = 1 person tripping over a paving stone in Pontlottyn.
We've never had TV opt-outs, and they took our radio opt-out off us a few years ago, claiming it wasn't needed. It's scarcely any wonder most people around here (Wrexham) watch/listen to news programming from Manchester and Liverpool!

Re: BBC not always London or SE Centric

in the "good old days" of "proper" radio, with valves and big long wire aerials festooning every garden, there were loads of "local" radio stations provided by the BBC, (as they were the only broadcaster).... most of them were low power stations, in the medium wave, and it was possible to actually turn a tuning knob on the front of the radio, to find "alternative" radio programs from other (neighbouring) localities.....  each "local" radio station concentrated on news and events in its own area, and linked up to the main BBC station for the National News...... ah but them days have gone because of "cost".... yes there are still some so called local bbc stations, but the area they cover is usually about the size of Wales, and after 7pm is usually most of the country as they shut some down, and rely on the "major" station operators to provide the programme content. e.g. we can listen to BBC SOLENT, during the day, but in the evening it coverst pretty much the south coast from Brighton to Bournemouth and up to Oxford and Swindon as well,... In other words it is really BBC southern england... Undecided

Re: BBC not always London or SE Centric

I've heard BBC Solent take callers from Kent, Herts and Essex.
It really is a terrible station, aside from it's ludicrous geographical reach.

Re: BBC not always London or SE Centric

My car radio is usually tuned to BBC Radio Sheffield, now called BBC Sheffield as there is also a TV station.
They have good content during the day.
All the above is irrelevant when my daughter is in the car as it's then Galaxy. Roll eyes

Re: BBC not always London or SE Centric

In Scotland we only have one "local" radio - BBC Scotland  Angry
More like BBC Glasgow - with a little from Edinburgh if we are lucky...
