Are the quotes that these things give legally binding?
My (two car) insurance is coming up soon and if I call their automated renewal line, it says that the price for twelve months premium is £16.95
A bit of a bargain methinks.

Nope, it definitely said 12 month.
I gave them a ring and it turns out that when I last spoke to them to try and knock the price down and get a quote for when I change car next month, the muppet I spoke to randomly added that onto my current bill

call them again..... and record the phone call.....
then actually speak to an "operator"... asking them to confirm what the call actually said...( you quote it verbally - cos you have just copied it from your recording).. and if they say Oh no... you know it is a con...but if they say. YES... take up the offer...
When the paper work arrives... check that it is as quoted on the phone... if not ...then you can start "proceedings" to get what they offered... as you have....
The phone call recording
A paper trasncript
A record of your call querying it ( and confirmation ).
With that.. I doubt if they would have any other course of action but to give it to you....
Good Luck....

Unfortunately, the chap I spoke to earlier identified that it was an additional charge that has been added, and not next year's renewal
