Australia & New Zealand

We are considering a touring holiday in OZ & NZ this coming UK Winter.

We have never visited either place before.

But we do have some friends who emigrated to Perth many years ago.

Possibly renting a RV, is it best for first trip to enrol in Escorted Tours, or just go it alone ?

Any advice appreciated.

In the process of Googling !!!

So much to look at.

We are also possibly looking to purchase property in either Country, perhaps in both...

Residency is a possibility, I think we would be OK in starting up a business or three.

Financially not a problem, hopefully enabling Visa / Residency if so desired.

Lots of nasty animal / bugs to avoid !!

As above, anyone done this ?

Touring, long Holiday etc...

Mobile phone coverage ?

Anything else to consider ?

Flight time from UK, or elsewhere (US) appears to be around 22 hours

Only 8 hours from Hong Kong though, maybe stop over there for a while, with relatives.

TIA

Re: Australia & New Zealand

I lived in Palmerston North in the north island of NZ for six weeks, with two weeks touring the rest of the country.

I was a bit younger at the time, but my mum rented a car and we spent our time travelling that way. However, your situation is likely to be different.

New Zealand as a country is beautiful. No matter which way you turn, it looks like a postcard or somewhere you'd have to travel out to the countryside to see.

In the North you definitely shouldn't miss:

Lake Taupo - Beautiful lake, nice to swim in

Naples - Art Deco

Windy Wellington - Just because

Rotorua - Hot springs

The South island tends to be more picturesque. A few places we went to:

Kaikoura - Whale and dolphin watching

Hamner Springs - Views and walks, bungee jumping if you dare.

Christchurch - Just a nice town, really. We went there and watched Shane Warne destroy NZ in the cricket.

Spot on with the flight time. We flew with Qantas who were decent enough.

Let me know if you have any questions. It was a good ten years ago now, but I'll try my best to remember Grin

Re: Australia & New Zealand

We travelled South Island NZ about 10 years ago. Hire car and we booked 2 nights accommodation in Christchurch then 24-48hrs in advance with no preconceived ideas of where we would go or for how long - totally fluid and it worked perfectly.

Mind you the schools had just gone back from their summer holidays. What we really liked at the time (it may different now) was although many of the tourist places were well populated the roads getting to and from were empty.

Everyone was welcoming and very helpful.

Re: Australia & New Zealand

New Zealand is about the only other place I would choose to live, for me it was like being back in England in the 1960's.

I don't mean in regard to music, hippies, drugs or anything like that, there just seemed more space and a much more relaxed way of living.

It is claimed by some that there are no snakes in NZ compared to Australia so if snakes bother you NZ is the place to go.

We stopped off in Signapore for a few days rather than face flying for 22 hours, would love to go back but these days 4 hours is the maximum I would want to sit on a plane for.
