posting nonsense in itself is not trolling.
posting it with the sole purpose to cause negative response is trolling.
voicing an opinion that others may not agree with is not trolling.

It only becomes trolling when someone insists on harassing a specific person or group of people with hateful and obscene comments...

Re: At what point does posting perpetual nonsense become viewed as trolling?

Old-fashioned trolling is winding people up or being a nuisance, rather than the abuse and harassment that is reported as trolling by the media these days.
Trolling can be more effective if you can't quite be sure whether they are being serious or not, so that people reply to the nonsense pointing out everything that's wrong with what's been said, which will be completely ignored but generate more nonsense plus assertions that they have extensive knowledge and understanding of whatever that nonsense was supposed to be about. Then at best, the discussion becomes a complete waste of time.

Re: At what point does posting perpetual nonsense become viewed as trolling?

Tricky question.
Someone may post nonsense as they are not fully or even partly aware of the facts but believe what they are posting is correct, in addition some may have strong views on a particular topic but those views could be partially based on incorrect information.
It has been mentioned that harassing a specific person is trolling and I would agree with that but equally if someone responds to your post in a scarstic way do you ignore it with the potential of getting more of the same ?
Regular users of this forum will have already formed opinions on those they consider to be posting nonsense and in most cases will choose to ignore it but it can be a problem as it can sidetrack a serious discussion.
Perhaps I am guilty of some or all of the above, as to whether or not I am trolling only others can decide.

I thought there was one user in particular that AndyH was thinking of.
If not, it's just the string length question again.

Re: At what point does posting perpetual nonsense become viewed as trolling?

There is one user - although I don't want it to be seen as some kind of personal attack.
Everyone can have a view on something, albeit within the forum rules - this is the whole point of chit chat in my book.
However, when some posts incorrect facts/statements time and time again, it raises questions in my mind whether it's a perceived form of trolling or a general disruption. Is it only trolling when it's deliberately done? Or is it also trolling when someone post the first thoughts that comes into their head and antagonises other forum members?

Re: At what point does posting perpetual nonsense become viewed as trolling?

from wikipedia -
Quote
a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion, often for their own amusement.

seems to be a fairly reasonable explanation of it
the key word, for me, is deliberate.

Would this be a person who has a certain signature?
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
