Art, or just a load of old tosh?

Quote
Susan Philipsz wins Turner Prize for sound installation
Susan Philipsz has won the £25,000 Turner Prize for an art work that can be heard but not seen.

Quote
The Scottish artist is the first person to win the award for a sound installation.
Philipsz records herself singing 16th century laments and plays them in unusual locations, including supermarket aisles and a series of bridges over the Clyde in Glasgow.
The judges said her work, Lowlands, "provokes both intellectual and instinctive responses and reflects a series of decisions about the relationship between sound and sight", providing "powerful sculptural experiences".

I like music, all sort of music. I like looking at pictures in an art gallery too but this bollocks is beyond me.

so, you've been to the gallery and experienced her work ... which is why you are able to make the judgement that it's a load of [Censored] ... or you just read an online article ?
... just wondering

@Oddball, Do you know if there is a link to the Sound?
Sorry for the pun, but it sounds like a lode of brown stuff, from what I have read.

I had the misfortune to have a short period of time to waste and thought I would go to the top of the Baltic in NewCastle and take a pic of the Bridges, never seem rubbish like it

[Edit]
Here is a link to the room where the Sound/Noise is playing, it just does not deserve to win any prize!  It is just BEEEEEEEEP

I didn't say that, I said this type of art is beyond me and asked the question is it art or a load of tosh?

Re: Art, or just a load of old tosh?

it was on the BeeB last night with an "Expert" critic saying how wonderful, as he minced up the street, and they did show the room and some sounds

I usually discount any 'art' that requires an elaborate justification. This seems to fall into that category. In my view it is not art if it is not obvious to all and requires some explanatory narrative from the artist or some 'expert'.
Also, the balance of art versus craft is important. This seems to be mostly craft and in my view is not good art (rather like a certain artist's model of a skull encrusted with diamonds).

Re: Art, or just a load of old tosh?

I haven't experienced the work in question so cannot comment on it but the Turner Prize produces an annual deluge of criticism. I always like to bear in mind that Turner himself was heavily criticised and was a lover of "mixed media" by attaching poetry to some of his paintings. To me, the wonderful thing about the Turner Prize, and the controversy that surrounds it,  is the debate it creates. I live close to the Baltic gallery and have seen some wonderful examples of "modern art". I have also seen pieces that leave me cold.

It's said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I guess the same applies to art.  I have a Miro which I love as do some of my friends but others look at it and wonder what it's all about.

looking at the Miro Wiki  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Mir%C3%B3 I could also live with some of those, but his country compatriot Picaso - he was just mad

That is an interesting observation. I like some of Miro's work but not as much as love 2 works by Picaso and I have the WWW to thank for that. Before the web my take on Picaso was informed by newspapers and television who, naturally, chose his less accessible works to illustrate their own particular theory. With the web I was able to see and examine thousands and thousands of works of art that were previously denied me. There is much of Picaso that I love but two stand out; Guernica and a series of studies of a bull. I can't see these as mad:

I like abstract and surreal paintings too. I wouldn't mind owning a Miró, but I doubt I could afford one.
I own several by this artist: http://www.wenczkaart.co.uk/ ; I particularly like his abstract art, such this: http://www.wenczkaart.co.uk/Gallery7%20abs.html and http://www.wenczkaart.co.uk/Gallery4%20abs.html which is similar to one I own. It is impossible to see in the photo, but his paintings all have masses of tiny intricate details, which I can sit and stare at for ages.

Mine isn't an original alanb, just a print. Sad  My Miró is sometimes called The Upsidedown Man and I think it's great. It's also known as Dog in front of the Sun. I see something different in it every time I look at it.

Sounds like we'll both have to hope for a long-lost wealthy relative to remember us in their Will then.  Smiley
